Much ado about nothing

Life is boring without Arsenal football on telly, isn’t it? And seeing as the only transfer info worth bothering about is players we’ve actually signed, it’s been extra quiet in the Arsenal world.

At least the Euros are starting soon, and we’ll be able to see a few of our players in action. I for one am looking forward to watching Podolski play! I’ve watched him quite a few times, but it’ll be different this time, as I’ll be watching him play as an Arsenal player! For Germany, of course, but you get my drift. I haven’t really looked at the draw, but a Germany v Holland final would be fun! We win, regardless!

Oh, and Robin’s won yet another award! Well, sort of! He was voted Player of the Season in the fans’ poll on the Arsenal website. The most unsurprising poll result in the history of polls, you could say! I guess the only thing surprising is the fact that he only got a measly 77.7 percent. Should have been 100%, no?

Here’s a quote from the Arsenal website article on it:

The stats tell their own story: 37 goals, 13 assists, PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year, winner of the Golden Boot and now the Arsenal fans’ Player of the Season. This truly was the year Robin became football royalty.

He’s been the ideal captain this season, and it’s a shame we weren’t able to win a trophy. That would have been the perfect icing on the cake for such a brilliant season. But alas, there’s next season, right? Sign that damned contract Robin, please!

One player who is certain to be at the Emirates next season- the rest of his career, if we are to believe the quotes attributed to him- is Thomas Vermaelen.

The Daily Mirror (and other news outlets, like Sky Sports, have picked this up) has him as saying:

I will stay at Arsenal forever. There will be no transfer for me. I love London. I’ve got a house there, I’m happy there and I don’t see any reason to ever leave the club.

As much as I’d LOVE to believe this and take it as gospel, I just can’t. It just sounds too good to be true, and I don’t want to be heartbroken! Who was the last player who retired at Arsenal? What happens when Arsene leaves? What happens if he falls out of favour (fat chance!) and wants to get first team football somewhere else? Never say never. And if does leave, I for one won’t hold him to this statement. Footballers say that all the time, don’t they?

Still though, it’s nice to hear him say that, given that it doesn’t seem as if he was under pressure to say so and I won’t mind being wrong! He’s been amazing (mostly) the few seasons we’ve had him, and I won’t say no to more of the Verminator!

In other very exciting news (for me, especially!), it’s been confirmed that we’ll be playing in the Markus Liebherr Cup, pre-season. There are 2 other teams in the competition- Southampton and Rangers- and it’ll be played in Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, July 14! Exciting for me, because I live in Southampton so unless something ridiculous happens, I shall be there! My first away match! (Shhh, don’t tell anyone!) Can’t wait! I don’t know what the rest of the pre-season schedule is, but I’m already looking forward to seeing the team in action, and welcoming our new signings! (Surely it can’t just be Podolski!??)

Not much else going on in the world of Arsenal at the moment, although there’ll be some action on the Emirates’ “pitch” today, tomorrow and Monday, what with Coldplay performing! You can look at pictures of the transformation on the website here. Wish I was going, but I’m not. If you are, do have a good time! I’m sure there’s a joke to be made about the Emirates and crowd noise, but I won’t! 😉

Enjoy the extended bank holiday weekend/jubilee celebrations, and hopefully there’ll be good news to share in the week regarding new signings!

What disheartens me most are those Arsenal fans who mistake meek obedience for loyalty. They pay the inflated tickets prices, they buy the expensive shirts, they spend generously to go to the away games, and in return they expect – nothing! Why? Because they believe all the nonsense from Ivan that spending money on quality signings is not in the best long-term interests of the Club. How daft can they be? Before their eyes they have seen these past seven or so years the squad deteriorate from the very best in PL to what it is now. Without Arsene, an alchemist turning lead into gold, the team would have spent last season in the middle reaches of the PL. And if they blame anyone at all for lack of success, it’s him!

What would you have loyal fans do? Abandon the club just to make a point? As frustrating as it may be to be a goober during this period, I feel like I am weathering the storm for better days ahead. Also, what am I to do with myself if I choose not to “blindly” follow my club?
