Tottz’ WOA Questionnaire 2011/12

Morning all,

Apologies for the lateness of the blog this morning, it was a late night yesterday watching Jay-Z and Kanye West in action!

There’s not much news out there this morning for me to really report or discuss. Jack Wilshere has had another operation, this time on his knee, which will keep him out for 2-3 months but keeps him on course for a return at the start of next season. I presume this is the same ‘on course’ that he was on for a February, March, end of season return? I’m no medic but something doesn’t seem right about Jack’s on going injury issues. Time will tell I guess.

There’s no further comment or news on RVP so little point speculating of believing the press hacks who are trying to sell papers through fabrication.

Now it’s over to you…

I’d like to get your thoughts on the season gone. Below is a quickfire review of the season questionaire, have a ponder, haver a think but I’d really like to read some of your answers on what has been a testing season.  Please numercially bullet point your answers below and I’ll collate and review:

Enjoy! ~ @Tottz82

    Morning Sir…
I’ll drop in my answers one at a time through out the day…

    1. Player of the season (without RVP!)

There have been many players of the season for me, and also many disappointments. The three players who have stood out (except for RvP) have been Koscielny, Arteta and Song. Kos has had a great season and is improving, however, he has also been caught a few times. I don’t think he is our player of the season just yet. When push comes to shove… I think it has to be Arteta. He has been quiet, but sensible, has slowed the game down when required, sped it up when required, scored some vital goals and added some defensive security to the squad. Without him, we have really struggled to win games (last 6 games of the season)

    Answer: Arteta

  • karl

Supporters and punters alike rightly wrote Arsenal off early this season after losing Fabregas, Nasri and then getting battered by United and beaten at home by Liverpool. They have done great to get 3rd place but nonetheless, have won NOTHING and don’t look any closer to stopping this trophy less drought. Arsenal have far too many poor players and far too many unreliable players. The signing of Podolski is a great piece of business but many more are required and many need to be shown the door. Its a sad day for Arsenal Football Club when ANY of its fans become happy and content to finish 3rd in the league NINETEEN points adrift of the winners, very sad.

    1. Player of the season (without RVP!): Koscielny
    2. Most improved player of the season: Koscielny
    3. Most Disappointing player of the season: Djourou
    4. Goal of the season: RVP against Everton
    5. Your moment of the season: Sagna’s header against Spurs
    6. Funniest incident of the season: John Terry falling over
    7. Lowest point of the season: Blackburn 4-3
    8. Player you’d like to sign this season (be realistic!): M’Vila
    9. Player you’d like to see sold this summer: Where do I start?
    10. What Tottnum player would you like sign?: Modric
    11. What Man United Player would you like to sign?: Howard Webb
    12. Finally Yes or No, will RVP be an Arsenal player next season?: Hell Yes

  • devday

    2. Most improved player of the season

There were a few players who come to mind.
I wasn’t sure if Gibbs was the right man to succeed at left back after Clichy departed, but he has shown that he is a really good quality left back. His games this season should stand him in good stead for next.

Koscielny is an obvious candidate too – he has had some exceptional games, but also has been a little error prone too.

I’m going to throw two other players into the hat – Coquelin – who has never let the team down and I hope has a big future at Arsenal.

And then the player who I think wins it. Rosicky. An absolute cracker of a season. I though he was dead wood last and on the way out – but he has picked up his game this season and really come through it. He for me has improved the most from where he was last season.

    Answer: Rosicky

  • vj

@ devday: yeah really good shout devday, completely forgot about that one completely agree, what about Szczesney, it was his first full season and although we expect a lot from him he did not dissapoint in anyway, plus as to Arteta I agree but I just think they were so many times Song came up with that crucial ball for the goal that no one else really produced (except theo at times)

    @ vj:
Of course, Song comes a close 2nd but you saw how much Song struggled without Arteta, my award goes to the Spanaird!

  • devday

Most disappointing player of the season…

Hmm, that’s a good one… and there are a few candidates.

    1) Djourou
    2) Ramsey
    3) Park & Chamakh

I’ve grouped Park & Chamakh together as they were both our back up strikers, but both failed to make any sort of contribution to the team – I know they weren’t played much but surely that’s down to their performances as cameos and subs and training.

Djourou also disappointed me, at right back he was a liability. And at centre back, he wasn’t that great either.

But for me, despite a good start, Ramsey was very very poor at the end of the season. To the point where he wasn’t played by Arsene. He was meant to be the replacement for Cesc, but he proved to be a liability too.

    Winner (or loser): Aaron Ramsey

@Karl: Sorry, but I did not start supporting Arsenal 45 years ago, so that I could shout louder than everyone else, that my club was owned by someone with more money than the rest, which mean’t I won everything, every year and my club had the most expensive players, paid the highest wages for their mercenary gain. I have taken huge pleasure from seeing the TN cup kings, the GG teams moulded from Youth and AW teams put together with bargain buys, who become world class and beat the best of the rest. Yes seven years is a long time without a trophy, but I can remember similar gaps in the past. And lets not forget, we have challenged, unsuccesfully, but still challenged for honours in those years. This does not mean I fully support Arsene, as I think he is lacking both tactically and with his reading of the game now. I am not adversed to a change of manager as no man is bigger than ‘The Arsenal’ But I would honestly not swap our club, for the moneybags approach of many others. All those wanting some spiv Eastern European business man to take over the club and lavish his fortune, for his and our temporary gain, you are singing from a different song sheet to me. I am prepared to wait until this fad changes, spend my money and once again see my club achieve against the tide of opinion, as we have done so many times in the past. That is what being an Arsenal Supporter is all about, and the honours when they do come, feel properly won and not stolen. Now that’s a club history you can be truly proud of.

Having charged us £26 simply for the privilege of buying tickets for a few seasons, they woke up to this money-making opportunity in time for the 2011/2012 renewals, which were offered at £39 for the season – an absolutely whopping 50% increase in the cost. In keeping with the now established norm, when Arsenal kindly invited us to renew at this new bargain price, they once again couldn’t be bothered to mention the increase in the accompanying letter; it was simply stated as the cost for that season. You might think they would feel moved to apologise for such an increase, and to make some attempt to explain and justify it, but that most basic level of customer service was clearly too much trouble, so they didn’t bother.

When I wrote to complain, not only about this mammoth increase, but also about the sly, underhand way they had implemented it, I received what was clearly a standard response which, when you stripped away the window dressing, basically said there are thousands on the waiting list, mate, so if you don’t like it, kindly sod off and we’ll sell it to the next punter. When I pursued the issue with a further letter, challenging the weak and feeble points they had offered, I was completely ignored and no further correspondence was forthcoming from the club.

The team’s performances on the pitch may be frustratingly inconsistent, but that is not a failing of the faceless, corporate money-makers behind the scenes. Certainly not.

True to form, this year’s renewal has emerged and, yes, it’s gone up again. This time the increase is to £45 (for Silver lite – I believe it’s £55 for Silver…erm…heavy?), thereby contenting themselves with a mere 15% increase for the coming season. Still, when coupled with last year’s rise, it means the cost has gone from £26 to £45 in just two years. That is a quite breathtaking 73% increase and, once again, they made no attempt to excuse or justify it, or to offer even the merest semblance of an apology for the latest hike. The letter simply states the cost for the year, along with some marketing drivel. Naturally, I have already despatched my complaint to the club, but having emailed them over a week ago (at the time of writing), I have yet to receive a response.

Quite frankly, Arsenal’s behaviour in the whole matter is nothing short of a disgrace. Safe in the knowledge that fans are not customers – we can’t simply go to another club because it’s cheaper, the way you might shop at Asda instead of Sainsbury’s – they plan to abuse their position to the maximum. To paraphrase Denis Healey, the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Labour Government of the early ’70s, Arsenal obviously intend to “squeeze the fans until the pips squeak”, and to make no apology for so doing.

The basic increases in price are shocking enough. Remember, Silver Membership doesn’t actually buy you anything; it simply buys you the right to buy something, i.e. a match ticket. The cost of that Silver membership now exceeds the cost of actually attending a match, which has to be unacceptable in anyone’s language. But if that were not bad enough, perhaps the most offensive aspect of all this is Arsenal’s total contempt and disregard for the fans. Never once have they made the increase public, made even the slightest attempt to justify or explain it, and certainly they have never troubled themselves to offer even the most insincere of apologies.

Arsenal is my club, as it was my Dad’s and my Grandad’s. I’m 51 and have supported the club for over 40 years through thick and thin. But since our move to Ashburton Grove, they think and act more and more like a big, faceless corporation, trading on fans’ loyalty to fleece them with ever-higher prices for tickets, memberships, food, drink and anything else they can think of. I used to love Arsenal with a passion. Identify with the club. Feel part of it. But since we left Highbury, they seem intent on destroying that connection with the fans, and the behaviour over the TRS pricing exemplifies that. The scale of the price hikes, the failure to be honest about them, to justify them, even to bother to apologise for them, is a shameful disgrace – an exercise in contempt for the fans of which the club should be truly ashamed. I can safely say I have never felt so disconnected from my club and so disillusioned with them.

Arsenal used to be a byword for class, for doing things the right way. No longer, it seems. I hold them out as a disgrace. I call them to account for their shameful, appalling, contemptible treatment of their supporters. I ask that they explain themselves, apologise for their shameful behaviour and undertake to start treating their fans with a great deal more appreciation and respect.

Unfortunately, since the move to Ashburton Grove, they act increasingly like a faceless corporation, and therefore I expect no such change and that my hope for improvement will remain unfulfilled.

Subsequent to the submission of this piece, the club finally got around to responding. Here is what they had to say…

    Dear Mark Davis
    Thank you for your email.
We do understand and empathise in respect of this matter. I do appreciate that your email is detailed and heartfelt and I do apologise for the brevity of my response.
In respect of this issue, there is a paragraph within the membership Q and A’s that addresses the increase in cost of Silver membership. This was a joint response issued by the commercial, communications and marketing departments.
“Why have we increased membership again?
Silver Membership provides you with a priority window for ticket access two months ahead of the fixture, and one month ahead of Red Membership. Silver Members have a far higher probability of securing a ticket for the match in the location they want than Red Members. Unlike Red membership it is a closed scheme and the maximum number of Silver Members remains the same from one season to the next. It still represents strong value for money, and its price reflects the benefit of the priority access.”
Once again, thank you for your Email. This matter has been logged and will be reported upon.
    Regards

I think their response demonstrates clearly that they couldn’t give a stuff. To simply cut & paste something from a Q&A – something that didn’t even begin to answer my points – shows their total contempt for the fans. Interesting as well that the reply is anonymous. Further evidence that Arsenal has become a faceless corporation and not a football club. Very sad.

Laurent Koscielny – Come on leaps and bounds this year, especially after his muck-up in the Final against Birmingham, bounced straight back.

Most Disappointing player of the season:
Per Mertesacker – I think he costs us games, but starting to maybe think about his love for the club as he convinced Podolski, could be a true loyal gooner.

    Goal of the season:
RVP vs Everton – Great little chip from Song over the top and an immaculate finish by Robin, great goal.

    Your moment of the season:
Mikel Arteta’s goal vs City – I hate city with a pure passion, my Brother and Dad are season ticket holders, and since it was at the Emirates they were sat at home, just so I could celebrate infront of them.

    Funniest incident of the season:
Have to admit, Sp*rs getting Europe League made me laugh.

    Lowest point of the season:
Losing 8-2 to Manchester United. Literally ALL of my friends support them, so they wouldn’t let it go for a few weeks.

Player you’d like to sign this season (be realistic!)
I would love for us to sign either; Arturo Vidal, Yann M’Vila, Mats Hummels, Mario Gotze and another decent full back.

Player you’d like to see sold this summer
Lots; Bentner, Chamakh, Park Chu-Young, Vela and Fabianski.

What Tottnum player would you like sign?
I would say Bale, he’s played left-back before and he can play there again.

What Man United Player would you like to sign?
Vidic, in my opinion the best centre-back in the world. A real leader, good at heading aswell. Him and the Verminator would just be absolutely solid.

Finally Yes or No, will RVP be an Arsenal player next season?
Yes, he needs to realise how much trust Arsene put in him when he was not wanted by Feyenoord. With the players we’ve been linked with, we would be a trophy-winning side.
