Newcastle vs Arsenal – The Preview

Morning Folks…

Today we have  3pm kick off up “norf” against Newcastle United. It means that the game is not on TV and it means that it will be a huge streaming session. Maybe a trip to the gym for a steaming session is required first – but I could just do that at home – I have a kettle.

So Newcastle are without their super-money-transfer-out player in Andy Carroll – despite the transfer fee, which none of us will ever understand – Carroll was the their star performer and now they are without him (he wouldn’t have played anyway due to an injury) – but with Ameobi also out injured, that leaves their strikeforce consisting of Neil Ranger, I think? In fact, they have Alan Smith, Steven Ireland and Steven Taylor all out too – so if anything our first team should beat their reserves.

Our injuries consist of Denilson, Song, Nasri, Vermaelen and Fabianski, so it looks like “just about fit in time”, Abou Diaby will be the only choice in midfield:

Szcznesy

Sagna – Djourou – Koscielny – Clichy

Wilshere – Diaby

Walcott – Cesc – Arshavin

Van Persie

With a bench of Almunia, Eboue. Gibbs, Eastmond, Rosicky, Bendtner and Chamakh

The front four could just deliver something special if they are all on form. For me, Arshavin has played himself back into contention with some smart play in recent weeks and deserves to play now – we will need him to be firing on all cylinders come Barcelona!

Arsene spoke ahead of the game and had this to say:

“They had a fantastic game against us at the Emirates, where they did very well collectively. We lost the game that we will never forget to a header from Carroll. But we were a bit unlucky as well on the day because they had only one shot on target and that was their goal. Carroll has been injured for a long time, so it is difficult to predict whether it will be easier [without him]. Sometimes a team finds a different balance when a player goes out, so it is very hard to know. But certainly it is difficult to sell a striker of that calibre at 10.15pm and bring somebody in at 10.45pm. They have taken an opportunity to sell the player at a high price with the gamble of course that they might not replace him. But they have Ameobi, Best, Ranger – they have strikers still, don’t worry, and they will certainly want to invest that money later on. But they are still a good side, Newcastle. When they played at Fulham this week, the pitch was not the best and I think it handicapped the two teams. We expect Newcastle to be up for it against us and so we prepare ourselves to meet a good team.”

That’s one thing that will always be the case – Newcastle will be up for it – they will be raring to go and their home support love it when the big teams come to town. This game will be a tough one, any team with Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan means that players like Theo Waclott and Van Persie’s ankles are at serious risk. On Tuesday against Everton, the referee was terrible, and to the extreme level of terrible – today we need a good ref who understands the rules.

I should be back for match day live later today, and you can follow us on twitter @worldofarsenal…

Til later… have fun!

  • Fo

    The Newcastle team should be:

Harper, Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Barton, Nolan, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Best, Ranger

  • devday

    @ Fo:
That should be the team. Best & Ranger were up front in the last game.

  • Thierry Bergkamp-Wright

Only thing I’m praying for, besides a victory, is that our flair players finish the game unscathed.

Particularly with violent bigots like Barton lunging at them.

  • devday

It’s a worry – look at how hard Everton went in to us on Tuesday – the referee didn’t protect us at all – they carried on for a while and took chunks out of us.

    Newcastle will be worse.

  • Fo

Theo, Van Persie & Walcott start!

  • Fo

I meant Arshavin, Walcott & Van Persie – and Cesc!

  • Vazy

well what can i say… at 43 mins so far…

what a score line… and it dosnt look like its going to stop for now!

    GO ON YOU GOONERS!

  • Berth

  • Sam

Wonderful Arsenal, but let me be the first to say Barton is nothing but a thug.

  • Vazy

    well i spoke too soon…4-4 83 mins

  • Vazy

    COMON YOU GOONERS

  • bayo

SAME OLD ARSENAL….SAME OLD COACH….THAT BROUGHT IN ROSICKY AHEAD OF CHAMACK AND BENDTNER WHEN THE BALL TURNED TO A AERIAL BATTLE……ARSENE NEEDS TO LEAVE

  • bayo

WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL BEFORE….ITS A SHAME SUPPORTING ARSENE BUT NOT ARSENAL….HE IS BIGGER THAN EVERYBODY…..DJOUROU HAD AN INJURY, HE BROUGHT IN SQUILLACI AND WE CONCEDED FOUR GOALS.

HE DOES THIS EVERY YEAR…EVERY TRANSFER WINDOW AND WE GET THESAME RESULT…SO GOOD TO SEE THE END EARLY….A TEAM THAT CANT DEFEND FOUR GOALS FOR 30 MINUTES…..THANKS ARSENE U ARE THE KING OF FOOTBALL….AND ONE FINAL NOTE BARCA WOULD DESTROY ARSENAL AND HUMILIATE US. LETS KEEP THE MONEY IN THE BANK, WE DONT NEED ANY PLAYER, WE ALREADY HAVE MIYACHI AND OTHER YOUNG PLAYERS.

  • Gooner Get Ya

WTF we were 4-0 up? How did we mess that up!!

  • http://worldofarsenal.co.uk Josiah

I don’t think we can win the league now because morale will now be low because the team will be agrieved by how shit they were to concede a 4 goal advantage, and overall its just not good enough there should be no excuses either.

  • zizou

This can happen only with arsenal..if it was something like a classic comeback, wouldn’t have been this frustrating…a scrappy comeback with the wholehearted assistance from the referee…..diaby could have been bit more intelligent and that could have shown us barton leaving the ground in his place…wenger too have to take some of the blame for letting away a 4 goal lead in just a quarter of a match!

  • zizou

    premierleague dreams of 2010-11,R.I.P….

  • Al

What a shame we really coulda won the leauge this year. won some really hard games but wasted the bankers newcastle spurs etc
itl come close few points in it and will jus miss out. All because of these stupid games we messed up.

  • http://worldofarsenal.co.uk Josiah

AJ your completely right, I haven’t seen the game yet but I’ve heard squillaci was poor and there shouldn’t have been two penaltys for newcastle or summin like that, but I still think it just overall isn’t good enough, I really pray we bounce back from this

  • goonerman

Firstly i would like to say barton is a disgrace to premier league football and the man should not be allowed to play football, we can all call diaby an idiot for hitting back but he has allready had a career threatening injury and barton goes steam into him with a challenge like that, its easy for us to criticise but i cant blame him for what he done.

secondly Szcznesy did hold onto the ball after the first SOFT penalty a bit to long but for nolan to then get him in a headlocl and chick him to the floor is a joke. punishment??

finally i allready said about the first penaly being soft but you could see it possibly being given in other matches but the second was a joke. kosclieny was in front of the player so how was he even meant to know he was behind him??
i can admit that we were not good enough in the second half but the only reason newcastle got something from that match is becuase that referee allowed it!! absoloute joke!!

  • Sam

@ Bayo – How long have you been waiting to say all this stuff? The first half was a joy, and the second half turned around because of a thug called Barton, followed by a stupid Diaby, helped by a biased ref. The red card for Diaby was correct, but Barton should have seen red too!
We are still in a good position. We are still in 4 competitions. We are on a good unbeaten run.
But it was painful dropping two points, I hear you. However, that doesn’t give anyone the right to lash out like that!

  • Kodjo

    @ goonerman

completely concur with your assessment…Barton got off with murder…sure Diaby shouldnt have reacted but still i dont blame him if referees like Dowd allow such dangerous tackles to go unpunished…couldnt believe that he allowed a foul on Arshavin when he is taken out from behind by Nolan…

Sure Nolan deserved to be sent off too…hauling Sczesny to the ground is a straight red…no different from Diaby’s situation

the 2 penalies were a joke..the first one could be given any day but the second???? absolute joke…and u know what i knew we would be robbed by refs as soon as we gain momentum and start putting pressure on Man Utd

The unfortunate thing is all the media will focus on Ntle come back forgeting that the chief culprit in all of this is ref Dowd.

Another point how low has the stock of Rosicky fallen???? clearly at fault for the equalizer…when experienced and kool heads were needed he goes in a tries to hack the ball away..miscues and then fouls he player in the process

Clearly Squillaci just cant cope with the intensity of premiership games…he comes in when leadership and calmness is needed at the back and he completely fluffs it….

Lastly JD’s injury means that we got seriuos problems at the back…clearly going into the barca game..we are in trouble..i dont see how Squillaci can cope. He sold Diaby short on the pass that led to the sending off. Jittery throughout the game…and rightly so Pardew smells blood and sends in a 2nd striker to have a go at Squillaci ..bcos he lacks pace, not calm on the ball and cant pick a pass.

And i ‘m surprised by Wenger’s post macth comments…seemingly let ref Dowd off the hook when it was clear he was the villain in this match…my fear is that the non english players will look at this and sure we are not protected….maybe think its time to move on…like Vieira thought of a few years back.

The firs half effort was fantastic though…keep fighting on…

  • Kodjo

what a relief…Man utd do not benefit from dubiuos ref decisions today…but i’m still gutted… a win w’d have put us within 2 pts….

  • Sam

Bayo, all ur shouting was for nothing. We actually closed the gap on a strange day!
Not such a bad day at the office. I certainly feel better now!

  • arseneknows

    Right!
We gained a point on the lead today – please can we forget what happened
at Newcastle?? The manner of the draw felt disgusting – but come,
Somehow we’re closer to united and they still have all those difficult
    Matches to play!!!!
That result will have made our boys feel so much better – WE CAN DO
THIS PEOPLE – WE CAN DO THIS – today ends up positively!!

COME ON GOONERS – LET’S BELIEVE!!!!

  • bonathan

thing is, if we don’t win the league this year, we now have about 5 games we’ll look back on and think WTF!! usually when a team finishes 2nd they’l have 1, maybe 2 games where they’l think, ‘if we just got those points there’. it’s really quite amazing that we are still in a good position. watch out for chelski coming up on the rails now though.

we simply have to win it, things like this can play on players minds for years. sometimes for the better, but often for worse. hopefully, we can all laugh about these results come the end of the season, i truly believe if we win the leauge this year it could really be the start of something spcial. if not then who knows, competition is gonna be tougher than ever for the coming few years at least.

still, winning the carling cup will be important if nothing else. just hope we don’t let that slip too!

  • devday

Okay, today was bad – very bad… I’m just written up by thoughts on the next blog!!

  • arseneknows

    @ Vazy:
    Yes mate – yes mate!!!!

Totally agree with you – today was a 1 off at a time
When we are playing some great stuff!!!

Keep it positive people – I know it’s hard, I know
you want to shout and stamp and blame and throw
Your arms up – but a combination of
Strange shit happened today – we’ve avoided
Being punished – Lucky us!! We didn’t loose – we
Move on – we’re getting closer to the top, that the
Reality and the facts – forget what could have been

    COME ON ARSENAL!!!!!

    Big up to Vazy!!

  • yemi

Some guys only come to throw childish tantrums when arsenal lose! They are never around when things are going well.

Arsene gambled (as usual) during the transfer window, now we are stuck with squillaci, djourou out, song out, verm out and we are back to bare bones. Denilson is d only dm we got for d next couple of epl games
