Arsenal 3 – 1 Chelsea, Mental Barrier Broken…

Before anyone says anything about anything…. I just want to say, that we just beat a full strength Chelsea side – one that included Cech, Terry, Lampard and Drogba – we beat them 3-1 at our ground and it could have easily been more. Not only did they just have their spine all present, but they had first choice players like Cole, Mikel, Malouda, Kalou and Essien all in the game too!

The two line ups were:

Fabianski

Sagna – Djourou – Koscielny – Clichy

Wilshere – Song

Walcott – Cesc – Nasri

Van Persie

With a bench of Szcznesy, Squillaci, Rosicky, Diaby, Arshavin, Chamakh and Bendtner

Chelsea’s team:

Cech

Ferreira – Ivanovic – Terry – Cole

Essien – Mikel – Lampard

Kalou – Drogba – Malouda

And it was a great result – 3-1 was a superb result against a team packed with big names, but like we have done before, lacking confidence.

What we did is that we played like Barcelona did when they beat Real Madrid – by pressing the opponent until we won the ball and making them make mistakes. It was an impressive performance around the pitch for all the players involved.

The first goal came at the best time, in the 44th minute – just before half time – and we very much deserved it – in fact we owed it to ourselves to score it – we had dominated the first half – emphatically – and that has happened so many times before – but a good piece of play between Wilshere and Song saw the latter lash the ball into the bottom of the net, left footed – across the keeper. A goal that Song deserved – he was held back for most of the game and timed his forward runs well.

It was clear that we had the upper hand and it was clear that we could put this game to bed if we continued in the second half as we left the first – and that’s exactly what we did with an awesome two goals in three minutes involving two players who really played well – Cesc and Walcott – the first came from good hold up from Van Persie which saw Essien inadvertently angle the ball in Walcott’s path who raced forward squared to Cesc and it was 2. Walcott saying later that they both play Fifa and that it was just a “simple X”… the amount of times, we’ll all said that!!! The second one came from good pressing from Theo who stole the ball from Malouda, passed to Cesc, who put the Englishman in, and he finishing with aplomb. 3-0.

Although they got one back from a header from Ivanovic, they never looked likely to go on from there. Our game was safe 3-1 to the good…

Arsene spoke about the maturity of the players and the game they played…

“We have matured. We’ve been frustrated in big games away from home his this season. We have been disciplined, matured and played for each other. The first goal played a vital part. The focus and discipline of the team was good, even when we had to be less adventurous at some stages. We were quite solid. They scored on a set-piece. Drogba takes them very, very well. In open play, we were solid. Let’s hope that it strengthens our belief that we can challenge for the championship and it strengthens our belief we’re on the right way. There’s still some room for improvement. I’m confident that will encourage the team to continue to practice very hard and to focus well together.”

Digest and relax, we’ll need your supporting energy again very soon as it’s Wigan away on Wednesday (tomorrow!)…

And here’s a quote from my dear friend JAT to give you some excitement:

“If we can go on a 10 game unbeaten run, we’ll be looking very, very good…”

And our away form relatively good and our big games at home, we could just do that!

Til then… Adios!

    Wonderful game!

Truly amazing Perfomance by arsenal. Loved every bit of it

Clichy had an outstanding game, did anyone notice that kalou played the whole game? Sagna perfect as usual, as well as Song, who defensively nullified essien and Lampard more importantly. Wilshere lots of hard work, good movement and passes, should shoot more though i think. Walcott, thank god Wenger started him. His pace meant that Cole had to stay back and cover and so the normally dangerous ashley cole runs weren’t there. Theo did very well against the best left back in the world. Van Persie also like Wilshere lots of hard work, kept ivanovic and terry guessing all night. Finally the centre backs, Djourou had an amazing game, so many interceptions, proves his great defensive mind, Koscielny was like a wild animal, great flying tackles and big headers, if he can put in more performances like those then we have a great defensive unit. They worked together to handle drogba who only had one chance all night

Vj – agree about the centre backs, immense night, and great decision to play Djourou. And my boys loved it. What a first game..

Arsene at last you dropped the unfit Arshaven, now you must realise that fitness is so important Nasri stepped in and although he never scored one of the goals we have been used to seeing held his position on the line he stretched their back line time and time again, Walcott although played his part with a superb run through and a sublime assist for Cesc to tap in and a very good goal for himself often went missing down the line but luckily Sagna filled that spot and covered very well, Welcome back JD for a man with not to much playing time behind you you certainly never let it show a very solid performance. of course we cant leave out Song who once again ran his heart out,Cesc has found his belief and Wilshere grafted for all he was worth, the only downside is that when you show how well you can do, you may have stopped a signing in the window but with Vermaelen’s comeback imminent and Ramsey returning from the wilds the future at this stage of the season looks very very promising

team for Wigan, same back four, maybe rest sagna for eboue, same midfield, cesc misses so i reckon rosicky and diaby in for cesc and wilshere, maybe arshavin for nasri, play RVP to give him some game time, same with theo

For me Arsenal dominated the game for large periods.Djorou, sagna and clichy were fantastic in defence, the midfield trio of song, fabregas and wilshere were on song and the ever reliable nasri this term produced another superb performance and of course not forgetting the master himself, Arsene for getting the tactics spot on! A similar or slightly better performance next monday should ensure we see off Man city.

These people who keep on talking about making signings are not serious. If you look at the bench yesterday we had Arshavin, diaby, rosicky, squillaci, chamakh, bendtner. Denilson and eboue were not even part of the squad! Majority of these players would be in the starting line up of some of the biggest clubs in England if not Europe. Wenger needs to keep on fine tuning the team he already has and my feeling is the squad has enough depth to compete in all the fronts. Consistency will be key and we cannot let our heads drop for the wigan and birmingham games which are tricky away encounters but must wins.

After all is said and done, congratulations to the players and lets keep supporting the beautiful game.

At last! This victory really feels good! A real victory over chavs! The ref was awfull and let them away with many things. Lamps should’ve seen red after his nasty challenge on Song, chavs did nasty fouls to stop the game all the time and never seem to get any card. The part that saw me really fuming was when some c*nt stepped on Fab’s ankle, then the game went on and thhe ref gave a dangerous free-kick to Drogbreath in the follow-up… Trully disgusting. Van persie should also have had a penalty in the first half, as Ashley C*nt clearly touches him!!!
A fully well deserved win overall and it’s nice to win with style.

Walcott was awesome today! I thought he is still as clumsy as ever, but today he made many dashing runs backwards to held sagna. If he can provide such workrate on a regular basis, then he can easily fit in the First team.

Van persie is obviously missing match fitness, I thought he was lazy today. He looked a bit like Berbatov before his late impressive form. But VP10 ball control and technical ability is well beyond Chamack and Bendtner… and most of our squad! (bar Cesc and Nasri)

Song unfortunatly… I’m starting to get quite bemused by his acting like an offensive player. He played in front of Fabregas almost all the game!! IMO Song had Cesc place today, and Cesc was playing DM. Only in the second half did we see Cesc shine as he started permutting with Jacky boy. I start to think that Cesc recent loss of form comes from the fact Song just can’t keep his f*ckin position!!! Cesc can venture forward in the center or on the left side as Jack is very generous with his volume of play and gladly satys back to do the dirty work. But on the right side we almost never saw Cesc today as Song never once stayed back to cover for DM position! He did some runs to defend, but NEVER held the DM position!!!!

I will speak about Djourou on the Djourou thread. However, I’ll just say I give him my deepest apologize as I trully believed he could never make it at Arsenal. However he was awesome today, and showed much more skill and composure as I ever thought he could show.

Young Jack looks out of form at the moment. He hardly had any impact on the game. He looks like he’s not sure of what his role is in the team. But you’ve just got to love his commitment and the way he fights on every ball! Top lad and even if he doesn’t play his best football, I’d still want to see him on the team sheet every week!

Fabiansky still doesn’t inspire me any confidence. On Their goal he’s in no man’s land…. YET AGAIN!!! He even managed to “limbo” under the ball as it was going straight towards him…
On their second goal ruled for offside, he also managed to push it in the goal in a ridiculous way…

I also thought we took the foot of the gas when we scored the third. We started to act very complacent at some times when we were leading, and there were some times during the game when I wondered if we were not going to offer them a comeback yet again… But all went good in the end. I’m glad we won this one, and lets hope it lifts us to highers grounds, this time!!!!

    5-0 to THE ARSENAL tonight . . .

  • yemi

    @ Shawn:
With you all the way. Lets stack the points and the goals difference !!! That is what is keeping united at the top of the log !!! The GD.

  • goonerman

    @ shawn and yemi
Please dont be getting to cocky, by all means be confident for tonight but dont go predicting huge scorelines. a win is a win and if we could get a 1 nil win that would be great. i dont mean to put a downer on your spirits but it seems whenever we get to confident we get slapped in our faces lol!!

  • ZimGooner

Wenger’s boys have shown that we’ve got the mettle to deal with any team in the world if we are fearless and play like a team. The young cubs have become lions and even if a tiger was offered wings wouldn’t it want to fly? I’ve always said that I’ve got a good feelin’ that something special will happen season. Yes we need the mental strength, yes we need the confidence, so there is nothing to stop us.
