Partizan vs Arsenal – Match Preview

So the squad has been announced and the full squad that has travelled is:

21. Lukasz Fabianski
53. Wojciech Szczesny
3. Bacary Sagna
22. Gael Clichy
6. Laurent Koscielny
7. Tomas Rosicky
8. Samir Nasri
11. Carlos Vela
15. Denilson
17. Alex Song
18. Sebastien Squillaci
19. Jack Wilshere
20. Johan Djourou
27. Emmanuel Eboue
23. Andrey Arshavin
29. Marouane Chamakh
28. Kieran Gibbs
46. Henri Lansbury

Which means that both Almunia and Diaby have been dropped – Arsene cited the reasons for Almunia’s non inclusion in into the squad as injury – with him apparently picking up an elbow injury during the  penalty incident – I’m unsure whether it was conceding the penalty or saving it. Diaby – we simply don’t have a club why he was left out – but most fans are aware that he was diabolical against West Brom, so obviously not ready for first team action. It’s a strange one – how come Diaby doesn’t play any reserve games when he comes back from injury? He is obvious in need of games when he returns. I think Arsene rushed him back to rest Wilshere, and it seriously back fired…

Anyway, onwards and upwards to the preview of the Partizan Belgrade game…

So with the squad above, and the current impact that the team is making with certain players, I think we’ll play a slightly different team tonight, with two holding midfielders, both ensuring the defence doesn’t concede, considering the most recent performance.

Fabianski

Sagna – Squillaci – Koscielny – Clichy

Denilson – Song

Nasri – Wilshere – Rosicky

Chamakh

I have a hunch, just a small hunch, that Arshavin won’t start the game – I think he’ll be rested in time for Chelsea and we’ll see Rosicky come in for him. I’m pretty sure we’ll see Wilshere and with Diaby dropped, Denilson will come in to steady the ship. The evergreen Chamakh will no doubt lead the line in the absence of both Van Persie and Bendtner….

Bench: Szcznesy, Djourou, Gibbs, Eboue, Lansbury, Arshavin, Vela

It’s interesting to see Szcznesy on the bench for this game, after his recent comments… maybe Arsene is making a step in the right direction to prove to him that he is wanted at Arsenal. If he is as talented as Arsene has made out, then he needs games and we need a goalkeeper…

And after all the depressing goalkeeper comments, there is some good news in regards to captain fantastic, Cesc Fabregas:

“Cesc for Partizan is impossible,” said Wenger before his squad flew out on Monday. “But he has started to run so we have to monitor his progress in the week and there is a little hope there he will be available [for Sunday].”

If he is back for Sunday then I’ll be absolutely delighted… But in the meantime, who on earth will be our captain – with Almunia, Vermaelen, Cesc and RvP out, we may see a new captain – I think Rosicky had captained the side before, and Arshavin (oldest), Sagna and Clichy (longest serving) could be options…

More in the comments later… Come on you reds…

I thought you posted at 00:00… late one tonight…!!
    Excellent stuff re keepers…

I think Rosicky will captain the side tomorrow, without the others we need his experience.

    My line up:
    Fabs
    Sagna – Squillaci – Koscielny – Clichy
    Song – Wilshere
    Nasri – Rosicky – Arshavin
    Chamakh

  • Yemi

    My line up:
    Fabs
    Sagna – Squillaci – Koscielny – Clichy
    Song – Wilshere
    Nasri – Rosicky – Arshavin
    Chamakh

  • Yemi

    on second thoughts,
    My line up:

    Szcznesy
    Sagna – Squillaci – Koscielny – Clichy
    Song – denilson
    Nasri – Rosicky – Vela
    Chamakh

  • ny

where is Mannone? is he not the 3rd choice keeper?

  • vj

possibly eboue and gibbs in at RB and LB to rest clichy and Sagna, the time for Gibbs to replace Clichy seems to be ever closer with clichy’s failings defensively, i really hope he shows up tonight and especially on sunday, he needs some good games. Hope fabianski has an error free night for once, though I expect us to concede one vela might be invovlved as well

  • Yemi

    ———-Mannone/Szcznesy———–
    Sagna – Squillaci – Koscielny – Gibbs
    ————-Song – denilson———-
    ——Nasri – Rosicky – Vela———-
    ————–Chamack—————–

Denilson should be a little bit of added cover on that left side. nasri and rosicky can interchange at intervals. I am not so sure about ebuoue in that RB position.
    To the WBrom game
I almost wept in that match…… We played the same way we played against sunderland, only worse being at home. Complete passes were far in between, shots on target rare, no player trying from outside the 18yrd box, right and left back dissappointing, clichy was almost always not around in his traditional position, DM engrossed in going forward thereby leaving the CBV’s open, diaby was not ready, infact the only thing that has been consistent about diaby is his inconsistency.
I am starting to worry about chamack too, Can he shoot with his legs, Fine he holds up play for others to come in, but who comes in ? Nobody!!! And what is the problem with arshavin? looks so so disinterested. WBrom just took over the midfield.

If some players don’t get dropped to the bench, they won’t sit up. They need the theo effect. I think his being droped from the WC made him work harder. Drop arshavin and give vela a run of games. Drop alum and flappy and give mannone and Szcznesy a run of games.

    @Kodjo:
Nice to see ur post after a long while.

  • Arsefan101

    @ Yemi:
No Wilshere and no Fabianski? I think Wilshere is our best player at the moment.

  • Arsefan101

    @ ny:
    Good point, Mannone has disappeared!

  • devday

    @ Yemi:
    @ Arsefan101:

I’d have to agree with Arsefan101, I think Jack Wilshere has been one of our best players so far this season. He has a calm reassurance about his play and frankly seems interested in the game – of course this comes off the back of Abou Diaby’s inept performances.

I also agree with Yemi – I think Denilson will start next to Song – we’re defensively not covering the centre backs.

PS, I’ve heard from arsenal.com that Abou Diaby is out with a recurrence of his ankle injury.

  • devday

    @ ny:
It is interesting that Mannone hasn’t featured at all this season – Almunia was on the bench for the Carling Cup game (which is also a bit weird).

Looks like Szcznesy is our number two!

  • Yemi

    @ Arsefan101:

On jack, I just don’t want us to overuse the young lag. He is just 18 and has started/played more games than every other player.
On flappy: If i had my way, he would have left by now!!

  • Kodjo

I’ll go for Dev’s and Yemi’s second line up…we do need some defensive cover esp playing away from home.

Yes whats with Mannone? Diaby injured again…i’ll blame Wenger for this if he was rushed back. The question is was hee really needed cos we had Denuilson available..granted he played the entire 120 mins in the spurs game…unless Denilson also had some niggles that we are not aware of for the West Brom game.

Good to see the Lansbury has travelled should be given a chance…he shows more committment than Arshavin.

  • Kodjo

    @ Yemi

I have taken a step back of late…just watching how our season is shaping out. We looked good for the first couple of games with most of our players i.e. rvp, walcott, fit diaby…giving us options in midfield and in attack….they get injured and all of a sudden we look bereft of ideas.

Good to hear from you too.

  • Yemi

    @ Kodjo:
Nice to know: I was just wondering,
what is the plan B for arsenal? When plan A fails, what do we do next ? crumble?

What happened to pre-injury clichy ? what happened to reliable sagna whose only minus was not being able to deliver proper crosses?
What happened to magical arshavin who hit four past reina at anfield?

When are these injury woes going away ? You cannot continue to have 6 first teamers out injured at the same time every season. Cesc, RVP, Vermaleen, Theo, B52, Alumina, Diaby, gibbs and newly graduated frimpong who impressed in pre-season…
    also not forgetting Rambo

  • Arsefan101

    @ Yemi:
Very true – Jack is only 18 – but he has a rest now, let’s give him an hour tonight. Although he doesn’t look like he needs a rest!

  • Kodjo

    @ Yemi

I guess the issue is being efficient without the need to play fancy football.

Man Utd do it well… with their build up play usually occuring on the wings when things aren’t panning out well in the middle of the park…they tend to swing crossses in ….i think we should vary our play now that we have Chamakh who is a good header of the ball. Plus when B52 gets back.

Unfortunately, Sagna is still learning the art of crossing the ball properly…Asharvin on the other side rarely does so…key point being crossing the ball at the right time.

Clichy for the most part gets the trajectory wrong..so Chamakh doesnt benefit as the ball flies over or he has to apply a lot more effort to generate the power required.

Our style of play takes it’s toll on the players come Feb/March…it involves speed, movement and a lot of the ground is covered…for me its just too much effort and in the long run the players will be more susceptible to muscular injuries.

Eitherway we do not have players who can cross the ball properly on either side of our midfield/ flank..so we dont score what i call ‘easy’ goals.

The game plan when we play Eboue ..is that he tucks in close to Chamakh…it is successful if we outnumber the opposing players…the draw back is that teams just defend deep and narrow just like the last game. The left back just drops deep bcos there’s nothing happening on his side of the field ..thereby providing the extra cover needed to pick up Eboue, Arshavin or Nasri around the penalty box.

  • devday

Arsenal team to face Partizan: Fabianski, Sagna, Djourou, Squillaci, Gibbs, Rosicky, Denilson, Song, Arshavin, Wilshere, Chamakh.

  • devday

Big news – Koscielny dropped / rested after bad performance against WBA – Clichy also replaced by Gibbs – Clichy also had a bad game.

  • devday

Big news – Top scorer Nasri is rested today after his recent exertions

  • devday

    1-0 to the Arsenal…….!!!

  • tom G

does anyone have a link for the match? thanks..

  • devday

    Damn 1 -1… Denilson handball

  • Tm17

I think Song thinks he has become messi
over the summer he just tries to dribble his way trough

  • devday

Sorry dude, I don’t know any links – normally myp2p is the place to go!

  • Shawn
  • Tm17

  • Tm17

    Penalty missed from arshavin !!!!!

  • Tm17

    Chamack !!!!!!!

  • devday

2-1 with a great double header from Chamakh… we’re in the zone!

  • devday

We scored from a corner…. 3-1… interesting after I whipped out the corner stats earlier today!

  • Berth

“I think Song thinks he has become messi
over the summer he just tries to dribble his way trough” – Song will be our greatest nitemare this season if he continues this lack of discipline and form, and guess what folks? No replacement for him

  • Bonathan

So, fabiaski does turn out to have a decent game. is almunia likely to be back for the wkend does anyone know?? if not then fab gets another game, if he is, wenger has adecision to make. indeed, is this the turning point of fabianski’s career, or was it simply a one off. lord knows he was due a good game.

it was only two saves (one superb, the other expected really) and a coulple of decent catches (again, pretty standard) so i don’t think we should get carried away!

having said that. it’s exactly what he needed and you could see his confidance rise after that penalty save. here’s to hoping the worst is behind him.

good win. looking forward to seeing squillaci partner Tommy V. i think it will be a really good backbone for us.

  • Robert

    Is Arshavin ok? not injured?

  • devday

    @ Robert:
As far as I am aware, he’s fine. Where did you hear that?

  • Robert

I was watching the soccernet live commentary, it said Arshavin was replaced by Clichy because of an injury…

  • tom G

thanks for the tips on the link guys.. much appreciated..

  • Tm17

Wow you can see how Wenger is fast
tracking Wilshere for the eventual depart
of Fabregas and I can say one thing for
sure if Ramsey comes back to playing as good
as when he got injured and Wilshere plays like
he plays since the begining of the season we won’t
    miss Fabregas at all !!!!!!!!!!
And to be fair Arsene has like he says many times a great team for the future !!!!
