England Squad Announcement: Theo Walcott Left At Home…

The England squad was announced today and the following 23 will be travelling to South Africa: Keepers: James, Hart, Green – Defenders: Cole, Warnock, Ferdinand, Upson, King, Terry, Carragher, Johnson – Midfield: Lennon, SWP, Cole, Milner, Carrick, Barry, Gerrard, Lampard – Strikers: Heskey, Crouch, Rooney, Defoe. The big news is the inclusion of Shaun Wright Philips over both Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson. It’s a strange one, as I really thought Shaun Wright Philips would have been behind both Johnson and Walcott. Johnson having ousted Shaun Wright Philips out of the Man City squad.

With the Theo exclusion, I have to say it wasn’t a forgone conclusion that he would be in the squad, but his form has let him down and his appearances against Mexico and Japan were pretty bad. There is a major worry that I have for Theo. I think he’s lost all confidence – and that has come through in games for Arsenal and England – the player will be very very low on confidence next season. But it’s not he worst decision. Theo’s been pampered in the last four years and has to get his play and his form sorted for club before he can think about country…

Theo out? Good or bad decision?

    Walcott confirmed OUT

  • steve ryder

definitely a good decision – needs to wake up and start performing for club first instead of banging on about england 24-7

  • steven

100% right ti leave him out…he needs to start performing for club first – wenger has shown much patience with him and all he keeps babling on aboutis hoping england win the world cup.

shut it and perform 4ur club boy

guys pls take it easy on theo….i’ll say that being the pragmatist that capello is, i am not surprised by this decison. even though i am an arsenal fan i believe that SWP has more end product to his game even though Adam Johnson forced him to the bench.

i am not making excuses for theo but i think his participation in the under 20 or is it 23 world cup and subsequent injury is part of the problem. he had a start-stop season …when he payed cont he never found the consistency needed. capello is not a man who bases his decision on emotions..otherwise on the back of the croatia game..theo would have been on the team.

it is clear that it has not clicked for theo this season and fans need to support him so he gets back to his best or at least achieve the potential that we all know he has.

poor guy it’s a summer of soul searching and seeking ways to improve his game.

all in all capello is right…will he regret it…i very much doubt it.

I think a big part of Theo being left out is Rooney. I think Wayne holds a lot of sway with the team and he’s seemed really unhappy with Theo’s play over the last few matches. I have to question the logic of leaving Theo off instead of Lennon who’s been out for how long?

Theo needs to step his game up a great deal as he has a lot of things he needs work at. Not surprised by his omission.

  • Nick

Also…. since Ramsey just signed a new long term contract doesn’t that mean Barcelona should start talking about signing him?

  • Pete

In all honesty, the problem for Theo started when he was selected for the 2006 World Cup. If Sven hadn’t selected him back then, Theo wouldn’t have had so much hype to deal with and he’d be just young player. But because of 2006, people have expected more from a young player that usual.

His confidence this season has probably seen more lows than highs, and on current form Capello is right to leave him out. But when the confidence is there, it seems to bring out his ability much better, he’s like a different player and arguably better than some of those wingers going to South Africa. He has performed for England and for Arsenal at various times, but as everyone seems to agree, its about doing it consistantly. What he has going for him is that he’s still young and time is on his side, but he needs to work hard too.

Hopefully not going to the World Cup will actually take a bit of pressure off the lad, he can just concentrate on his club and his football development.

I’ve heard it all now from the Wenger luvvies. Wenger six years ago knew that in 2013/14 or whenever, that this ruling about spending would come in! So, since 2004, the fact that he has single-handedly taken us from being the best team in Europe to playing for third/fouth place is because he knew at that time that in 10 years Europe’s ruling body would come up with this directive! So no youth enterprise project, no ego trip, no spending although we had the money, no spending at all, because Wenger knew! Fantastic, maybe his middle name is Elijah and if anyone knows his telephone number he’ll give you the Lottery numbers for next week! Utter, unadulterated tripe- anyone subscribing to this theory needs their head examining.

  • WalcottWilshereRamsey

THIS IS A FUCKING JOKE- WALCOTT SHOULD BE IN- THAT COCKSUCKER CAPELLO JUST PLAYED THEO TO SEE HIM FAIL- WHY DIDNT HE START LENNON OR WRIGHT PHILLIPS AND BRING ON WALCOTT AS THE IMPACT SUB- WITHOUT THEO ENGLAND WOULDNT HAVE EVEN REACHED THE WORLD CUP THEY WERE PLAYING SO BADLY- COMPLETE AN UTTER BOLLOCKS- THE ONLY POSITIVE IS THEO CAN ACTUALLY START THE SEASON WITH US 100% FIT AND MAYBE HONE HIS SKILLS AT HOME AND COME OUT WITH SOMETHING TO PROVE….BUT HE IS NOT A WINGER ITS TIME WENGER GAVE HIM A SHOT UPFRONT

  • devday

Apologies for the Warnock / Baines mistake in the original post….!! Neither are as good as Gibbs!

Re: Walcott, we’ve got to look at our team:

Next season with Van Persie, Chamakh, Bendtner, Vela, Rosicky, Arshavin, Nasri, etc. is Theo Walcott anywhere near first choice for front 3?

  • vj

wg=hat is all this arshavin bullshit if he had played slightly maybe we would have performed well, hed better show up next season if he stays im not adverse to playing nasri or theo on the wing instead of him

  • devday

    @ vj:
Arshavin is quality, definite starter – definitely ahead of Theo / Nasri – very dynamic and can create out of nothing – need world class players to join him though…

  • Francis

    @ Dev

sure theo is near the first choice 3..it just depends on the opposition. its clear that theo’s played more home game than away just because of the the way wenger sets up the team.

it becomes problematic if the opposing left back stays close to the 18 yard box and doesnt venture forward. theo cant use his pace to hurt opposing teams…this is where he has to vary his game, passing range and ability

we all know that RVP may not be availaible all season given his record. i can bet that theo will come out a better player next season.

vela will get his games esp at home….clearly the chamakh purchase is purely for tough away games…besides i anticipate chamakh being started slowy and gradually integrated into the team

  • Gooner Get Ya

We should send Theo out on loan now so he can play CF for another club and start showing AW he is good enough for us in hi CORRECT position.

  • vj

dont agree gonner get ya theo is an important player he should stay, sending him loan isnt good for us wenger and theo need to talk and sort it out, id love theo to play next season but he has to improve

  • Mehedi

    RVVVVVVVVVVVVPPPPPPPPPPPPP for Holland mind u

  • vj

talking about quality players harry redknapp says a team has already agreed a deal for joe cole, is it us? or is he leaving for new pastures or is he staying

  • Gooner Get Ya

    @ vj

Do you really see AW putting Wallcot as CF after buying Chamahk though. If he keeps him on the wing he is not going to fulfill his potential as he is not a winger. He will only ever be an impact player.

  • goonerman

Guys i think we should lay off theo, i actually feel sorry for the lad becuase he comes across as a genuinley nice guy not some cocky muppet who thinks the sun shines out of their arse like im sure a few players do. he has had another season affected by injury and like he says when you come back from a lengthy injury it takes time to build confidence and get back the feel for it and everytime he got a game or 2 under his belt he got hit by injury after injury, its quite clear he is not a great winger but to be honest he is one hell of a sub to come on when defences are completley nackered becuase one person you dont want running at you when your tired is theo more than any other player but it is fabio’s decision and i hope lennnon and wright phillips are rubbish lol.

Theo is does not have the best dribbling control and his crossing has a lot to be desired but all that can definatley improve because lets remember he was the youngest player in that england 30, Theo can have a deadly finish infront of goal which we have seen him do for arsenal but even more for southhampton and with him not having the best first touch but a good finish and the ability to make very good runs off defenders he really could be turned into a frightning striker in the mould of somebody like agbonglahor but like we are all saying we have so many strikers its hard to see how he will play upfront but maybe if wenger played the 4-4-2 formationa bit more next season we could see theo turn into a striker!!

  • Josiah

i didnt actually know he was a striker back at saints, i didnt know all this about how good he is at finishing, but if thats the case, people can see its not working on the right wing, he doesnt have to be first choice or anything big time like that, but surely it wouldnt hurt playing him upfront now and again?
