Champions League Draw Special…

Morning fellow Gooners…

Today has an added significance because it’s officially December 18th, which means it’s time for the Champions League round of 16 draw. Although we’re still in the Premiership and FA cup hunt, the Champions League is a trophy that we seriously covet and some journalists believe that we’re more suited for European action than our very own league.

As we finished top in our group, we will face those who finished second. Although I agree that we must play everyone eventually, I would prefer an easier side at this stage, so let’s have a look at who we could get.

We can’t get any other team from our nation (not that that matters anyway as all the English clubs came top) and we can’t get Olympiakos as they were in our group, so that leave 7 teams:

  • Bayern Munich
  • CSKA Moscow
  • AC Milan
  • Inter Milan
  • Porto
  • Lyon
  • Stuttgart

The fact that you look at each of those teams and think, I’d rather not (until you get to Stuttgart) shows the strength of this competition! It’s a really tough one, but who would you rather have out of these teams? I’ve tried to put them in order of which teams I’d like and it goes a little something like this.

  1. Stuttgart
  2. Porto
  3. Lyon
  4. CSKA Moscow
  5. AC Milan
  6. Bayern Munich
  7. Inter Milan

Hmmm, the draw is at 11am… til then!

…looking through that draw, I would pray for Stuttgart. I live in Germany (Bonn) and follow the Bundesliga (when am extremely extremely extremely bored). There is no better time to play Stuttgart like now (they are having massive issues internally and externally). Bayern are on the up and they are playing like a dose of adrenalin has been injected in them. So I would not fancy us drawing them now. All in all, I would opt for the German teams, because I get to attend the game live (selfish), but who isnt….

It seems all favourite tops their table except Juventus/Bayern & Liverpool that didnt make it in the top spot. Hence, it seems this draw will be a good draw no matter who we will face.

  • devday

I would prefer to avoid Bayern Munich and Inter Milan definitely though!

  • devday

This draw is taking sooooooooo long!

  • devday

We’ve got one of Milan or Porto…

  • devday

    Man United vs AC Milan!
Definitely prefer Porto to AC Milan!
    FC Porto vs Arsenal!!!!
We’ve got one of Milan or Porto…
    Lyon vs Real Madrid….
    CSKA Moscow… vs ….. Sevilla
    Bayern Munich vs Fiorentina
    Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge…
    Inter Milan vs Chelsea!!
    Olympiakos vs Bordeaux
    Stuttgart vs Barcelona
WOA snowed in! But is watching the UEFA Champions League draw live… so it’s all good!

The first leg of the tie will take place in Portugal on February 16, 17, 23 or 24. The second leg at Emirates Stadium will take place on March 9, 10, 16 or 17.

    not a bad draw

  • Gooner Get Ya

Phew I thought that was going to turn bad at the end. Good draw though and we should beat them.

  • Fabrez

Mourinho back to the Bridge and Becks back to the Theatre! Hm! Refecting on how hard it was for Man U to beat Porto last season at this stage, it shall b a real test for Arsenal but we can beat them for sure! Def got the “easiest” draw of the english sides!

  • Kuka

…..I would have liked a chance to be reunited with good old Lehman at Stuttgart, but I guess that is not happening. Poor old Helb will have to play against his employers (Barcelona), what a draw. Good for Arsenal. We’ll have most of our players back and should make it to the Semis. Chelsea have a much tougher draw of the english teams as Mourinho is quite good with psycological games and besides might prove a handfull given that Ancelloti pretty much inherited his legacy. We stand a great chance to make the finals as top sides will drop off at the knock-out stage.

  • Leeroy.N

Decent draw for us. Not too hard and not too easy. It will be a good test for the team. We definatly should have a pretty healthy squad in February, so it’s look good on the horizon!

Arsene made 67 in craziest moments in football…

    67. Wenger shoves Pardew (6/11/2006)

Arsene Wenger strikes you as a lovely man driven absolutely insane by football. How else to explain the manic gesticulating, the hand-shaking aversion, the apparent belief that Arsenal can win the title with a team entirely comprised of small, whippet-thin Belgian 15-year-old, the long-term feuds with Mark Hughes, Jose Mourinho, Sam Allardyce and Sir Alex Ferguson, the made-up words (“footballistically” and “playerish”, anyone?), or the frequent sideline spats with hard cases like of Martin O’Neill and Martin Jol?

Maddest of all was this flare-up, in which the man once dubbed ‘The Professor’ shoved West Ham’s manager after he had the temerity to celebrate a late winning goal.

  • Leeroy.N

Ahh yes.. Mr Pardew. That was a funny moment in his career. But the Professor can look back and laugh at most of those managers and ask them “where they are now?” HAHA!

  • devday

    Very true Leeroy, very true!
