Match Day Live, Liverpool vs Arsenal

Afternoon all, it’s time for Match Day Live and it’s a big one today. It’s Liverpool away, a game which is normally one of our hardest games of the season. This season, we go up to Anfield with a genuine belief that we can get one over on our rivals. From an Arsenal point of view, this season hasn’t been amazing, but it has been brilliant in flashes – but for Liverpool, their season has been diabolical – they’re out of the Carling Cup and the Champions League, they’re 7th in the table and have looked very average this season.

If we win today, we’ll go onto 31 points with a game in hand on Chelsea and Man United, who are on 34 and 37 respectively after both teams dropped points this weekend.

But it will be harder than we could have hoped, as Gerrard, Aquilani and Torres are all fit and all three are likely to start the game. All three have time on the sidelines, so it would have been much better to have them miss this game too – but it wasn’t meant to be. Of course, let’s not worry about the opposition… we have Thomas Vermaelen, and I’m sure he’ll keep Torres in his pocket all afternoon. Our free scoring centre half spoke ahead of the game:

“But the main reason I like playing for Arsenal is the vision of the boss, the way he wants us to play. I believe we can win trophies playing this way. What is the vision? The vision is basically for a young team who all share the same philosophy to play good football, to grow and eventually win a big trophy. I know there are many critics who say that playing a certain way then good things can’t happen. But maybe they should just think for a while and look at how a team like Barcelona has grown and how they play. Look around at their side. They don’t have many strong players but they have been winning big trophies.”

Talk like that fires me up big time.. come on you Gooners… he is very much right with his assessment, and let’s start this season with all that trophy winning melarkey!

Team news sees Diaby and Eduardo back in the squad. With both lacking match fitness and Eduardo looking rusty, I don’t think Arsene will put either player straight into the first XI, so I’d expect the following team to line up today:

Almunia

Sagna – Gallas – Vermaelen – Traore

Denilson – Song

Walcott – Cesc – Nasri

Arshavin

It’s a penetrative and pacey side, so that’s exciting, but it’s not a very tall side, so no crossing!!

Okay, time to watch the second half of the Middlesborough vs Cardiff game and then wait for the real team news…

And time to figure out how Arsene plans to get compensation from Holland for RvP’s injury!!

I’ll be back shortly for Match Day Live!

  • devday

The big game is roughly an hour away… news coming in is that Torres will start his first game for six weeks…

  • devday

Confirmed line up: Almunia, Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, Traore, Fabregas, Song Billong, Denilson, Walcott, Arshavin, Nasri

  • devday

Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Aurelio, Mascherano, Lucas, Kuyt, Gerrard, Benayoun, Torres

  • devday

Kicking off now… come on you Gooners!

  • devday

The stats are definitely on Liverpool’s side: Arsenal have not won on any of their previous five league visits to Anfield and have not kept a clean sheet there since 1988. I’m not sure that will count for much once we get started, mind.

  • devday

Both teams looking second rate at the moment…. lots of misplaced passes!

  • devday

Should have been 1 – 0 to Liverpool, Torres with a massive miss

  • devday

    BIG DIVE from Gerrard

  • devday

Liverpool are starting to get into it now.

  • devday

Replays show it could have been given, lucky for it to not have been. Gerrard did kick the ball way ahead of him anyway… replays all show that he was well offside.

  • devday

    Liverpool all over us!

  • devday

Torres dives in the area again! Terrible…

  • devday

Too many crosses – can’t head the ball Arsenal – so don’t cross!

  • Marc Callan

Have to say Song has been immense…probably our best player on the pitch

  • devday

You’re totally right Marc, Song has played well. Liverpool look very dynamic with Gerrard in the team.

Calamity in our defence… Kuyt scored. Liverpool 1 – 0 Arsenal.

  • Marc Callan

Kyut…typical…Almunia should have punched it harder

  • devday

    Terrible goalkeeping.

  • devday

Replays show that both players were offside when the ball came in.

  • Marc Callan

Honestly lads, team needs to be changed, Liverpool having it too easy, Arshavin hasn’t been seen, we need to be more penetrative

  • devday

Almunia has lost us quite a few points this season!!!

  • devday

Hmmmm, same sh*t, different half LOL!!

  • devday

    1-1…………………

    Johnson own goal!

  • Marc Callan

Great build up to the goal

  • devday

Wow, that was a seriously good finish… Arsenal 2-1 up now!

  • devday

Arshavin, swivel, shot, hit the inside of the goal post…. WOW!

  • tom G

    yessssssss! great second half..

  • devday

Done & dusted… a win at Anfield under our belt.

  • VJ

  • Leeroy.N2

Great win. Love the fight and drive to get back into it. We needed that! Come on you Gunners!!!

  • Sam

Like I said last night, O’ what a night!

All our rivals drop points & we get 3 points away at Anfield. Great Weekend, wonderful job by Gunners. Keep it up, boys.

  • Vazy

  • JDD

    ARSSSSHHHAVIN

  • Marc Callan

Lads, we won ugly! Great to say it, we were second best for alot of the matchbut over the moon

  • http://worldofarsenal.co.uk Josiah

    speechless.
    :)

  • yemi

like i said in the match preview yesterday, we need a win and we can get it!
We sure got it! Anyhow doesnt really matter wether we were second best, 3 points is all that counts.

  • tom G

just want to put a shout out for Denilson – it felt good having him back in the team and he and Song were immense today. Song was our only good player in the first half.

  • Pete

Just waiting for MOTD2 to come on. Great result, well done lads!

  • mesol

    devday..I dont like u keep blaming Almunia if we concede a goal..its a team game..not a person game..stop blaming him….we lost with a team..win with a team!

  • yemi

@mesol: i agree with you totally. lets not also forget that someone was supposed to be protecting him, ‘defenders’

  • jeffvip

Mesol n yemi, I believe what you said that this is a team game is correct. but personally i feel Almunia can done better than this soft touch on the ball. It merely giving opposition the chance to have an easy strike on goal, he should grab it or punch it harder.

  • mesol

jeffvip..people that not in the game can say anything perfect about what to or should do to stop the ball, but the truth is when we in the game, we must think very very fast, sometimes it is just a reflex action. so dont u ever try to teach an experience keeper what to do in that situation. ALL people dont want a goal to concede. If all the keeper can grab or punch harder like u said, there would be no goal in football.

  • Debs

‘Awesome’ is the last word on my lips as I fall asleep. Will try and do a proper post in the morning! :-)

  • jeffvip

I guess that makes the difference between ‘a very good’ keeper and ‘one of the best’ keeper.

I like Almunia very much but I admit he is not the best goalkeeper around…

  • dave

liverpool gave us a get out of jail card many thanks lads we escaped with your 3 points

  • JDD

no stop defending almunia he is the wink link in the team.at the moment he is one of the worst goalies in the prem.weve conceding 19 goals i think i guarantee at least 12 came from mistakes by him.ok players go through bad patched so hopefully hel start recapturing the form he showed at old trafford last yr but at the moment he isn’t playing well.

  • mesol

at least,he is the best keeper we have here..who do you expect? Buffon?

  • arseneKnows

I think it’s time for Fabianski to get a few games!
