Eduardo Signs, Gibbs Is On The Mend, Henry Debate Continues and Oh Yeah, The Premiership Is Back!

Eduardo Signs

Amongst all the doom and gloom of the international week, we’ve been given some very good news, as the club announced today that Eduardo Da Silva – our very own Crozialian – has signed a contract that will keep him at the club for a fair while to come. I’m unsure of the length of the contract, but the club and player have announced that it’s a long term contract. I’d expect it to be a 5 year contract and at 26, that will keep the player at the club until he is over 30…!

Arsene spoke on Eduardo and said:

“We’re delighted that Eduardo has signed a new long-term contract with us. Eduardo is a special player with huge talent and natural goalscoring ability, and we’re all so happy that he has committed his future to Arsenal. We have also seen in his comeback from injury, Eduardo is a human being full of courage, bravery and commitment. His full recovery from this injury is a testament to Eduardo’s character. We all look forward to enjoying Eduardo’s performances in an Arsenal shirt for a long time to come.”

And of course Eduardo – after recovering from his devastating injury – is back to full fitness. With Robin Van Persie being injured and likely to be out until the end of the year, it’s even more important that Eduardo’s raring to go – and the player himself says he’s more than capable of twice in a week. With Niklas Bendtner out too, it will be hard to rotate at the top…

“I am very pleased to have signed a new long contract with the club. I’m very happy and I hope to stay at Arsenal for as long as I can. This period is good for me now. I feel strong in my body and I feel ready to play 90 minutes every three days if it’s needed. I went to Croatia last week and everybody was telling me Arsenal play the best football in Europe at the moment. I agree with that. We feel we are strong now this season and we’re all going to give everything to win trophies.”

Gibbs Is On The Mend

The second part of the good news is that Kieran Gibbs is on the mend – the initial diagnosis of a fracture to the ankle was incorrect and he actually suffered severe bruising. News is that he’ll be back for Chelsea in 9 days, so that’s good news…

Henry Debate Continues…

Okay, I’ll keep this short, as yesterday’s comments have highlighted all the points, but Thierry Henry is not an Arsenal player any more, so whatever happened is not our fault!! Get it!!

Even if he was (and he kind of is and always been affiliated to Arsenal)  – it was accidental – so get off the great man’s back and leave him alone!

…and Oh Yeah, The Premiership Is Back!

And I’ll be back tomorrow to preview the Sunderland vs Arsenal game… with Kenwyne Jones and Darren Bent to deal with, I wonder what the line up will be???

  • Debs

Kenwyne Jones’ not playing 2moro, as he’s suspended. I think that’s awesome news! Lol

  • Fabrez

Yup…was just about to type the same thing Debs!! But u beat me 2 it! 😀

  • sam

So looking forward to Saturday. I’ve been feeling like a zumbie without an Arsenal game every couple of days.

  • Marc Callan

Is the game being shown on ESPN or Setanta does anyone know?

  • Pete

As well as Kenwyne Jones, Michael Turner is suspended for Sunderland too, and he’s pretty much been their best defender. And without Lee Cattermole in their side too, its probably a good time to visit Sunderland. But thats not to say it’ll be an easy game.

Really pleased for Eduardo. In all honesty, taking on the responcabilities of our main striker is probably nothing compared to what he’s been through already. It’s a challenge I think he can relish in, so I hope he of all people has a brilliant game tomorrow. He deserves it. He can link up well with the team as well as score goals, so good luck to him.

My starting line up would look something like this:

    Sagna Gallas Vermaelen Silvestre

    Denilson Song

    Rosicky Cesc Nasri

Regarding Henry, it wasn’t deliberate. You can see that when you watch the footage at full speed. The slo-mo replay makes it look a lot more deliberate than it was. So calling him a cheat is crossing the line because he’s shown what a brilliant player he is for many years. But the goal should have been ruled out and you still have to feel for Ireland going out like that.

  • wills

@Pete, yeah you’re right, this is actually a good time to visit Sunderland, although I think they will play with a 4-1-4-1 or 4-5-1 formation and sit back.

Not sure if Denilson will start, I’d actually expect to see Ramsey if he’s fit with Denilson on the bench, possibly a start for Vela as well?

As for Henry, yes what he did was wrong, but at the end of the day, the outcome is exactly the same as a dive to win a penalty. It’s just been made such a big issue because of who it was, the magnitude of the game because it doesn’t happen every week unlike diving does. As I’ve said before though, I feel sorry for Ireland and disappointed in Henry and France, but it’s done now, so lets move on and get excited for a big win on Saturday!

    Come on Arsenal!

  • wills

Breaking news…..Walcott back in the squad to play Sunderland!

  • Pete

Thats excellent news about Theo :)

  • Fabrez

Lovin that Theo news! Sweet! It’ll b tough to pick a side 4 the game… I’ll go with…

    Eboue Gallas Verm Silvestre

    Song Ramsey

    Rosciky Cesc Arsh

I think Sagna will b rested for all that footy he played 4 France, Silvestre shud get the nod ahead of Traore, Ramsey (not sure of his fitness) but I’d expect him to play. Hope Arsh gets his focus back because I’m gutted 4 him so imagine how gutted he is!! And I always thoroughly enjoy Rosicky, our Little Mozart, play! I expect sub appearances for Theo and Denilson maybe. Soooooo looking fwd 2 the game!! C’mon u redsssss

  • debs

Pete, you don’t have Arshavin in your starting XI. Was that deliberate? I hope he starts though, and takes out his world cup frustration on Sunderland! Lol

Is Theo really back?! That’s made my day! :-) I hope Ramsey plays as well. And maybe a cameo role for Vela as well? The future of Arsenal is bright!!!

Does anyone know if Rosicky played at all during the international break?

  • Pete

Hi Debs. Yeah, apparently Arshavin still wasn’t back from international duty yesterday, so wasn’t sure he’d be as fresh to start as Nasri or Rosicky. Don’t think Rosicky was included in the international squad, so thats why I started him. If Arshavin is avaiable then I’d probably have:

    Sagna Gallase Vermaelen Silvestre

    Nasri Song

    Rosicky Cesc Arshavin

With that line up Nasri could be an additional attacking player.

  • Pete

Yep, apparently Theo is a surprise inclusion in tomorrows squad, according to Cool eh 😀

  • Pete

Ah my bad. Rosicky did play midweek for the Cechs. They drew with Northern Ireland 0-0.

  • Pete

    Found this at

Wenger also hinted that he may rest William Gallas and Bacary Sagna after France’s match against Ireland went to extra-time on Wednesday.

Andrey Arshavin may also be left out of the starting XI after playing in a Play-Off match against Slovenia for Russia.

“The French players have played 120 minutes,” explained Wenger. “Arshavin comes back from a very long trip and is very disappointed. Apart from that, it is not too bad.”

  • JDD

    I Would Go With

    Eboue Vermaelen Song Traore
    Cesc Ramsey Denilson
    Nasri Eduardo Rosicky

  • wills

I think after hearing Wenger today, I think I’d go with the following line up:

I personally wouldn’t want anyone other than Gallas next to Vermaelen and actually, Senderos and Silvestre have done okay together.

We’ll have to wait and see what Le Boss does.

  • Fabrez

Yes Wills! I had the exact same thought! Arsene said something very vague when asked about whether Traore or Silvestre would play during his pre-match interview…something like “Maybe I could play someone else there”….or something similar to that. So maybe Verm will go LB and we see Silvestre and Senderos in the middle. I also think Arsh would be on the bench on 2nd thought so I’d expect Nasri an Rosicky on the flanks with Dudu in the middle. And agree with ur midfield…but we’ve got many options so it’ll b interestin 2 see which way AW goes.
