Post Birmingham, Pre AZ Alkmaar

Evening all… and it’s time for a good old fashioned Monday Round Up… it’s been a busy busy day in the wonderful world of Arsenal. So, where do we start… well, let’s start with yesterday’s game… and if you were there you would have heard the awful chanting coming from the Birmingham end.

There’s only one Martin Taylor, one Martin Taylor…

Obviously aiming the chant at Eduardo. In my opinion, it was bang out of order and really sad to see that type of chant sang – and in order to be heard, it must have been sang my the majority of the visiting fans and if you ask me, it’s a clear sign of disrespect, a clear sign of immaturity and an insult to a player who has spent the best part of the last 18 months recovering from such a horrific injury.

Arsene took time out to comment on the chant and said:

“That was frankly atrocious. They [the Birmingham fans] will not be remembered for the quality of their taste with that kind of remark. I didn’t say a word [when I heard the chant], I just thought ‘that’s low’.  Eduardo was here for the game. I  don’t know how he felt about the chants. I just put that in the ranks of stupidity, you want to forget about it and not talk too much about it because there’s not a lot to say. With people like that, one starts to say something stupid, everybody follows, even intelligent people. People lose their identity together, and their sense of responsibility.”

And he’s hit the nail on the spot. The timing of the chant was when Liam Ridgewell went through Theo Walcott. Ouch. Very distasteful and surprise surprise, Birmingham have k’od one of our players.

On Theo’s return to the side after being injured for the whole of this season, that challenge from Liam Ridgewell has seen him sidelined again – with a medial knee ligament, and normally that’s a month out plus a bit of recovery time. You’ve got to feel sorry for the boy, it’s hard to recover from an injury only to be injured again.

“The news is not good. We are without Theo Walcott for longer than expected. We thought it would be just 48 hours but it is a medial knee ligament, which is what I feared after the game. He will be out for three to four weeks.”

On Saturday we had Walcott and Rosicky start the game, but for tomorrow’s game, they’re now both injured! How quickly a squad can change – only a few days ago, we were analysing the problems we’ll have when we have a fit squad. Eduardo and Bendtner as also both out, so it looks like it’s going to be a thin squad. Actually the squad was announced today, take a look:

Vito Mannone, Manuel Almunia, Carlos Vela, Robin van Persie, William Gallas, Bacary Sagna, Kieran Gibbs, Thomas Vermaelen, Mikael Silvestre, Gael Clichy, Andrey Arshavin, Fran Merida, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Cesc Fabregas, Emmanuel Eboue, Abou Diaby and Alex Song.

Actually not that weak.

We’ll probably see Clichy and Sagna come back into the first XI – I’d like to see Vela, Van Persie and Arshavin make up the front three, but I have a sneaky suspicion that Eboue will play and Vela will be on the bench. More team news tomorrow…

In other news, the good news is that Nasri is set to play in the reserves against Wolves on Wednesday and so will Fabianksi, so it’s like 2 in 2 out at the moment… hmmm very annoying.

And finally, I’ll leave you with an Arsene Wenger prediction…

“What is interesting in the League is it is much tighter than everybody predicted before the season,” said Wenger. “There are six or seven teams that have a chance at the moment.  ”So we have all to be happy, take that potential in an intelligent way and think that when we are cruising we have to keep focussed and not lose it. Chelsea have lost against difficult but not unbeatable teams. For a while everybody thought Chelsea would be out of reach but that was certainly not the case this weekend and that gives everybody a possibility. Sometimes the fixtures [make a difference] as well. We were lucky to play at home this weekend but Liverpool played away. It’s difficult away from home. After the last international break we lost at Manchester City. If you look the two teams that lost at the weekend, Chelsea and Liverpool, played away.”

Interesting from Arsene… I wish there was only one team that could win the league and that was us… but hey… it’s going to be a challenging season!

  • Arsefan101

Can’t believe the chants by the Birmingham supporters, bang out of order… will anything be done?

I have a sneaky feeling Vela will start tomorrow! He deserves it :-)

  • Berth

Yeah Dev; it will be very tough.

  • ny

Wenger will start Eboue and Merida will play as a substitute. He want to give them some hope as both are now at the center of speculations.

  • Leeroy.N

Hello Dev, boys and girls too!! Very long time no see! I can’t wait for this match tonight, especially if a few of our fringe players get some minutes. Some of them have a big point to prove. Merida and Vela stand out most for me, given enough time the could make a huge impact on the game.. starting or sub. Not taking anything anyway from AZ Alkmaar, it wont be an easy game, but our players have something to prove and fight for, places in the squad, contracts and just to prove their own worth. I can see it being a really exciting game. As to the team selection, I wouldn’t try anything too fancy if I were Wenger, I’ve seen within them Prem this season how too much tinkering can cost you some serious points. But faith is still with him and whatever he decides to do! Come on you Gunners!!

Win, Lose or Draw… Gooner Til I Die!!!

  • Pete

Will be a very special game for Vermaelen tonight. The AZ Alkmaar manager gave him his debut when they worked together at Ajax, so a lot of respect will be had by our Belgium defender towards his former manager, and he’ll be keen to perform well on his first return to Holland since his move to the Gunners. Good luck Tommy! :D

Also Nasri and Fabianski are playing their reserve game tonight, so hope they have a blinding game :D

  • Debs

Almunia’s on the bench. Em, why? Is Mr Weng trying to tell us something? Fabianski’s in goal…

  • Pete

  • jien

wenger has chose to start Eboue on the right of the front three…we have 5 palyers on the bench who are under 20 years old..vela, merida, ramsey, wilshere and gibbs…are we breaking the recoed of having the youngest average age in a team in the champions league?

  • Debs

I’m quite impressed with the quality of our squad. We’ve got a whole host of players out, but we can still manage to put out a pretty good starting XI and still have an ok-ish bench. Very impressive, I’ll say!
    Come on You Gunners!

  • Leeroy.N

JIEN – I’m sure we have broken that record already once before. HAHA!

  • Chris

Hi guys. First time writing on this site but have been looking in for a while now and love the comments.

Any idea’s where to watch/listen to the game without Sky Sports???

  • Pete

Does anyone have a working stream by any chance?

  • Pete

    1-0 Cesc

  • Debs

This is such a weird match! AZ have most of the ball, and it’s slightly confusing because they’re playing in Red and White! Lol

    Oooh! Get in Fabregas! Goal!

  • Pete

Nice one touch football. Arshavin to RvP, who squares to Captain Cesc to knock into the net.

  • Debs

Guess you found a stream, Pete?

  • Pete

Know what you mean Debs, its like they’re wearing the old Arsenal home shirt lol.

There doesnt seem to be much urgency from either side. Might suit both teams to not have to work too hard tonight. But at 1-0 down you expect the home team to have a go now.

  • Pete

Yep found a stream thanks Debs lol Let us know if you want the link.

  • Pete

Half time 1-0 to Arsenal. Strange first half, very quiet, although van Persie nearly made it 2-0 were it not for a very good save from the AZ keeper

  • Debs

Exactly! It would have been even more weird if they had an ex-Arsenal player in the team! Lo. It’s really a pedestrian match so far, but good to see we can be clinical when we need to. And no worries Pete, I’m watching the match on TV.

  • Pete

Lucky girl, some of us cant afford Sky lol :P

    Second half underway!

  • Debs

Lol Pete! I’m home, is why!

  • Pete

Surprised your not at the Alkmaar game!!! We’d be 8-0 up if you were there Debs lol :P

  • Pete

Vela and Wiltshere are warming up!!!

  • Debs

Haha Pete! I’m picking my matches, don’t want to jinx any! Lol. And almost another own goal by Diaby, this time off his shoulder and onto the bar! Phew! Lol

  • Debs

    Vela’s on! Yay!

  • Pete

    RvP subbed. Vela comes on.

  • Pete

blimey, they nearly equalised from a set piece but shot it wide. They were ruled offside if it went in though.

  • Debs

Eboue’s played really well. Ramsey’s on for him now.

  • Pete

    Rambo on for Eboue!

  • Pete

    Grrrrr. 1-1 AZ Score

  • Debs

I’m absolutely seething after that equaliser!

  • Debs

I’m really really furious about that!

  • Pete

Full time 1-1. Gutted. At least we didn’t loose the game though, and in fairness it is a fairer result. Neither side really took the game by the scruff of the neck. Very weird match indeed.

Our next two Champions League matchces are at home, so plenty of time to win the group.

Liverpool lost 2-1 at home tonight too.

  • http://worldofarsenal.co.uk Josiah

a game we should have won.

  • jien

ya, an away draw in the champions league is not bad i think. even barca and liverpool lost tonight….

  • Pete

Thats what can happen at 1-0 though. Never mind eh. Doesn’t look like we’ve any serious injuries from the game at least, it was more like a kick about in the park lol. Very quiet stadium too, apart from the Arsenal fans :P

  • Pete

Even the reserve team drew tonight lol :P Nasri and Fabianski played the full 90 mins though, so should see them back soon.

  • Pete

Nasri only played for about an hour, my mistake. He got an assist setting up Sunus goal.

  • Debs

Anyone else think Merson is the worst ex-Arsenal player? He never says anything good about us, even when we’re winning! I don’t like it when it commentates on our matches!
Anyways, good to hear Nasri’s back, let’s just hope he hasn’t picked up any niggling injuries.
Still really mad about the equaliser, though! Lol. Frustrating stuff!

  • Debs

There I was praising us being clinical earlier on! Lol. I think I’m gutted about us losing our winning streak, not necessarily because we drew. But anyway, we’re still unbeaten in 8 games, and I hope the boys take out their frustration against West Ham on Sunday. And if I’m right, it’s our first draw of the season!?

I know I shouldn’t, but I do really feel bad for Liverpool! They’ve now lost 4 games in a row, and they’ve got Man U next in the league!

  • http://worldofarsenal.co.uk Josiah

Debs, don’t feel bad for them just yet, feel bad for them if we knock them out of the carling cup next wednesday :)

  • Debs

Lol Josiah! We’ve got an even better chance of beating them, cos I’m guessing the Cup will be the least of their worries! Come on the young guns!!!

  • JDD

we should have killed teh game of but at least we didnt lose we will still get through the group.

HIS HALF A BOY, HIS HALF A GIRL, MODRIC MODRIC!, HE LOOKS JUST LIKE A TRANSVESTYT, MODRIC MODRIC,! HE WEARS A FROCK, HE LOVES THE COCK, HE SELLS HIS ARSE ON ALBERT DOCK,LUKA MODRIC!,JENAS’S BIT ON THE SIDE!

  • Debs

That’s a little bit OTT JJD, don’t you think?

    (OTT JDD- that’s funny!)

  • Debs

But yeah, JJD, to me, it’s can be quite an offensive chant!

  • JDD

i think its a good derby day chant(31st october)

  • JDD

*should be london dock instead of albert dock

HIS HALF A BOY, HIS HALF A GIRL, MODRIC MODRIC!, HE LOOKS JUST LIKE A TRANSVESTYT, MODRIC MODRIC,! HE WEARS A FROCK, HE LOVES THE COCK, HE SELLS HIS ARSE ON LONDON DOCK,LUKA MODRIC!,JENAS’S BIT ON THE SIDE!

  • Debs

    I don’t.

  • Leeroy.N

a fair result in the end IMO. I think they seemed to just get bored with the game to be honest!

  • Fabrez

*sigh* Gutted…we r lacking that ability to be a bit more clinical. Can’t wait for Nasri to be back in the starting XI to be honest. Song, Cesc, Nasri…love that midfield! But yeah…seeing that Barca and Liverpool lost at home and Inter had a home draw too…guess we had a ok-ish result on the night. Confident we’ll beat Alkmaar in 2 weeks or so. And agreed Debs…I’m all for the derby exitement… having a go with chants maybe… but not feeling that chant JDD…a way too much imo. Let’s just b classy and beat them good and proper! They r in pretty good form tho so it’ll b an interesting fixture! I just don’t want to experience the heartbreak off last year @ the Emirates!

  • Debs

Yeah, Fabrez! Can’t wait for the Derby! I think there’ll definitely be loads of goals, I just hope we score more! (No own goals ofcourse!). Lol. I do think we have the better squad though, so we ought to edge it!

  • Berth

gunners were too casual especially Arshavin. Diaby was also at fault for not picking his man. It was a good game and am glad Wenger now understands the importance of keeping Arshavin till the end of a match. In all it was a good game but I just hope it does not slow our drive.

  • JDD

may be a bit strong i heard peopleusing it with torres name(instead of modric) and carraghers name (instead of jenas)so i thought i would change the names to spurs players and share with fellow gooners.unfortunately you not as passionate as me when it comes to arsenal vs spurs.

  • mesol

bring Almunia back…he deserved for 1st team

  • Leeroy.N

Happy Birthday to the one and only Arsene Wenger! I hope his 60th is a great year. Lets hope the boys reward him with a belated birthday present against West Ham. Come on you Gunners!!

Win, Lose or Draw.. Gooner Til I Die!!

  • Pete

    Good call Leeroy!

Happy birthday to Le Boss. We’re honoured to have you managing our club. Here’s to a great year for Arsene Wenger!

    Hip hip, hooray!!! :-)
