Afternoon all, and merry happy Friday to you all.
It’s been a busy week in the world of Arsenal having signed two players, albeit both 15 year olds – but also a busy week on the site, as we moved site today and unveiled our new look, Arsenal colours!
Onto today’s news and the main thing I’ve read today is all about Cesc’s review of the game against Man United and Barcelona – and of course, I don’t know if it’s been twisted, but he basically said he’d love to play in “that” team, referring to the Barcelona team that just won the Champions League. Here’s the excerpt:
‘Which player would not like to play for a team like that at the moment? ’They are probably the best team in history that I have seen play and I have a lot of friends there who are always telling me great things. Of course, you feel envy in a healthy way because of the way they play football. Everyone’s dream is to play in a team like that.’
Of course, if you ask any professional footballer whether he’d like to play in a team like that, he’d say, yes of course – he would be mad not to say so. And yes, Cesc has many friends out there, so naturally it’s true that they’d tell him great things. But in reality, the Spaniard has told the press countless times that he’s happy at Arsenal. I’m sure we’ll hear another “I’m happy at Arsenal” statement, but naturally would prefer if Cesc didn’t make such statements!
Back at the grove, Arsene is trying to extend both Van Persie and Niklas Bendtner’s contract and if you’ve played Championship Manager / Football Manager, or even if you haven’t, you may appreciate that a contract in this day and age must be renewed every 2 years at minimum. With the current rules, if a player signs a contract for 5 years, they are free to buy themselves after three years if under 28 or two years if over 28. That means, we’ve got to renew a players contract every 2 years to ensure the clause, article 17 or Webster (as it’s also known) is not invoked.
That’s exactly why Arsene has to renew RVP’s contract this summer. At £60k per week, if the contract isn’t renewed this summer, he can basically buy himself out of his contract for £3.2m this time next summer. Arsene spoke on RVP’s contract a week or so ago and said:
“Robin wants to stay, he wants basically to stay. But he still has two years to go.”
But yesterday, the Dutchman revealed:
“The club and I have not been able to make any headway. But maybe I will soon have something new to report. That is all I have to say on this now.”
We’ll see what develops over the next couple of days regarding this, but it’s imperative we sign him up or sell him (I obviously do not want to sell him!)
The other players contract that we’re looking to sign up is Niklas Bendtner – who has – even if you’re not a fan of his – he has improved as a player over the last year – in fact, in some quarters, people prefer him to Adebayor, so that’s definitely an improvement.
“It is of course a priority of mine to prolong my contract, and I have never said anything else. Of course, for me it is nice to receive the backing from the manager, and I hope to stay at the club for a long time.”
Niklas is a very confident guy, and if he can improve like this every year, then we’ll have one hell of a player on our hands soon – who would you rather have? Bendtner or Berbatov?
