It was simply a game where you couldn't look away for more than 10 seconds or you'd miss something. Hull came down to the Emirates with no fear and we named a strong side. It was time to exact revenge on the team that beat us earlier at the Emirates. A team who deserved a masterclass in football.
We started with the following line up:
Sagna – Gallas – Djourou – Gibbs
Walcott – Song – Diaby – Vela
Van Persie – Arshavin
All in all it quite an end to end game with Hull having their chances as much as us having ours in the opening period of the game. Hull were playing with no fear and it was no surprise that they were very dangerous early on.
Hull took the lead early on when a deflected shot saw a Barmby strike loop over Fabianski into the back of the net. It could have been 2-0 to Hull soon after when Geovanni had a free kick on goal, good save by our keeper.
But in reality it could have been 6-1 with the amount of play and possession we had. With about 15 minutes to go however, it remained 1-0 and Wenger threw on Bendtner and Nasri and kept on Arshavin, Walcott and Van Persie in a bid to equalise. It wasn’t too long before we did when Bendtner did some excellent work down the right, cross to Arshavin who squared to Van Persie for a tap in. Excellent play all round.
Then the controversy. A free kick, sent over by Nasri richotted to Gallas, a yard or so offside, who headed the ball into the net. Offside not given. The goal stood. 2-1 to the Arsenal.
Arsene said after the game:
“At last we talk about football. Of course we are here because we want to get to the Final. Being 1-0 down and playing against a Hull team who played a real cup game and were in the form of the start of their season tonight. We needed something special to win the game.
“Frankly if you look at the second half, they had one shot on goal from Geovanni who was quite dangerous but apart from that it was one-way traffic.
