Arshavin signs, it's official…

Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that Russian international midfielder, Andrey Arshavin has joined the Gunners from Zenit St. Petersburg on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.

Arshavin, 27, who played a key part in Zenit’s UEFA Cup winning campaign last season, was also a member of the Russian EURO 2008 squad in which he scored two goals from his three appearances, earning him a place in the ‘Team of the Tournament’.

Arshavin won the Russian Premier League with Zenit in 2007, making a total of 232 appearances for his previous club, scoring 51 goals. During his time with Zenit, he was also part of the winning team that picked up the Russian Super Cup in 2008, the Russian Premier League Cup in 2003 and featured in the UEFA Super Cup victory over Manchester United in Monaco last August.

With 41 international caps for Russia, Arshavin has scored a total of 15 goals for his country. His versatility has allowed him to play in a variety of positions; the 2006 Russian Footballer of the Year started his career as a right midfielder, but has since played as an attacking midfielder and more recently has filled the ‘second striker’s’ role.

Arshavin said he doesn’t have a working visa as yet so not sure he’ll play this weekend… And he said it was his dream to come to Arsenal… not too we were his 1st choice tho. But his msg to the fans was “Trust in me and trust in Arsenal”…i’m well excited! :D

I’m thinkin he shud get it b4 Sunday debs…he said he wasn’t fit… so once all is in order, i’m seeing a sub appearance perhaps? Can’t wait! :D

  • Debs

I can’t wait for the Sp*rs game now! We’ve got some avenging to do for the last game, and a substitute appearance will do just fine- he probably wont start a game on his debut anyways! Now I wish 2moro was Sunday! :D

< ![CDATA[Papa Arshavin, Your highly welcomed to the City of Emirate, were fantasy is turned to reality. I know you too well to say you are good is an undestatement. However the expectation is high but am confident you will surpass our (fans) expectation.

Once again thanks for Signing and credit to Wenger for bringing you here despite all the tumbles and bustles, you finally made It.

I cant wait for Your debut day. We all know what you can do, so please live up to it.

< ![CDATA[Work permit should be a formality as he's a regular international. Apparently he has gone back to Russia to tie up a few personal affairs (like moving his entire life accross a continent in a few days).

Apparently the Russian season finished in November so it will take a little time for him to get up to pace. Also I have no idea how god his English is and looking at how Pavlyuchenko had trouble learning it, that could be a barrier (although I'm backing Arsenal to help him out better than Ramos' Spurs).

All that said, I'm very excited to see how he will do. He's got undoubted talent and class and is the sort of player that a club of our calibre should be signing.

Saw a really funny video on youtube the over day where Arshavin missed a chance and was on is arse in the goal net. The keeper pick up the ball to distribute and layed it on the ground to kick. Arshavin was walking back out behind him and reacted in an instant, knicking the ball off his toes and scoring a cheeky goal. Classic.]]>

< ![CDATA[YAY WOOP WOOP WOOO HOOOOOOO! Alot of faith has been restored for me, I'm glad we got him and he looks the business from all those youtube clips we have watched.

And Steve he speaks english, he was being interviewed by skysports news and he understood everything asked and replied, not in the best english, but understandable.

    C'mon you Gooners!]]>

  • ny

indeed a happy news.Only one question.who will make it to the starting eleven when rosicky, fabregas, walcott and eduardo recover.

  • Debs

ny, I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get there, and that’s about 8 weeks or so before all them are fit. And anyways, competition’s great! ;)

  • Fabrez

Yup…competition! That’s what having a quality squad is about! :)

  • Debs

Can’t wait for Eduardo to be back, so Ade can understand what that word means! ;)

  • Fabrez

lol! for real! Clearly that isn’t in his dictionary!

< ![CDATA[Yeah, although it seems as if it was Wenger that ripped it out of his dictionary for him! Hopefully he'll replace that page soon enough! Edu can't be far off, and Bendtner's been impressive of late!

    < ![CDATA[Finally, some good news.

BTW, is Arshavin eligible to play in Champion's league this term?]]>

  • zohaib

I’ve heard he isn’t but I’m not sure. Are Zenit in the Champs league this year or are they playing the UEFA cup ?

  • zohaib

< ![CDATA[But even if he has played champions league, I think he should be allowed to play because now it's moved on from the group stages. Remember last summer when there was talk about Xabi Alonso signing for us, and the talk was that if he did sign, he wouldn't be eligible to play until the knockout stages or something. If I've got that correct. So by that I'm assuming since its a different stage of the competition, Arshavin might be available.

    Dev, got any ideas ?]]>

  • Berth

He cant play in the champions league. Zenith registered him earlier, so automatically he cant; remember Morientes not eligible for Liverpool when he signed with them after he had registered with madrid.

  • http://kierandelaney.net/blog kierandelaney.net/blog

No he’s not eligible. Rules is rules, maybe the FA will change them again for us! :D

  • Fabrez

lol! I thought he couldn’t play for the round of 16 but would be able to in the quarters? Guess i’m wrong then… I see those 4-4-3 formations ppl have and that would be awesome once we have an amazing CB pairing…so for now, maybe we aren’t gonna see that!

  • Debs

It says on the arsenal website that he can’t play for us in the CL this season, so I guess that’s a no.

  • Debs

Cheeky video, that, Zohaib! But wasn’t that a backpass?! ;)

  • Fabrez

He headed the ball back, so it was a legal back pass! That’s why that move is class…to tacke, get the ball, then get that low to head a ball back to ur keeper so he can hold it…tidy defensive work there Andrey lol

  • debs

Lol! So a header back to the ‘keeper is legal?! I didn’t know that. Interesting! Lol. He’s a class act, I’ll give him that! I’m still very excited you know! I’m sure he’ll not disappoint!

  • Fabrez

Yeah it is debs! lol I’m excited…but just trying to be patient with him as well bcuz i’m still on cloud 9! haha

  • Debs

LOL. Yeah, we’ve got to be patient with him, but I hope this feeling lasts forever! :D

< ![CDATA[And what do you guys think about this quote from Eurosport about the Arshavin deadline deal mishap?

It seems that some of the paperwork might not have been in order within the time limits, leading several of the tabloids to speculate about the possibility of the FA fudging things for the sake of a high-profile player joining the Premier League.

And it doesn’t take Perry Mason to figure out that if Sheffield United can sue West Ham over the Tevezgate relegation controversy, then Aston Villa could just as easily sue the Gunners for that money-spinning fourth spot in the Champions League, should they fail to win it on merit.

I don’t think we’d have such problem cos obviously if we hadn’t provided all the info in time, then the FA should not have registered Arshavin, so if at all anyone would be likely to be sued, it should be the FA, not us. That’s what I think anyways, cos it’s not like we made a mistake that wasn’t discovered, unlike the Tevez situation, so I think we should be fine if at all any issues come up later on…]]>

  • Fabrez

< ![CDATA[In my opinion, that story is rubbish! If he's under contract till 2014 (i think), won't the buyer have to pay quite a handsome fee? Don't think Barca would be able to get him that easily. That article in particular i think is rubbish debs...granted the story itself has been circulating for a while. I believe Cesc doesn't want to leave now & WILL stick it out for a year if we don't get back into the CL. Players in a big team like AC Milan are playing Uefa Cup footy...even £107M Kaka is there! So unless Cesc's desire is masively strong to go back to Spain at such a young age, I think he'll stay. But it's still early days in the league...4th spot isn't out of reach yet!
As for the Arshavin deal, i'm hoping it's just a big deal that will blow over soon. To be honest, the FA will have to answer questions, not us...so i wouldn't be too worried. We haven't done anything dodgy...if we failed to do it in time, that was the FA's responsibilty to say "No"...but they didn't & i'm glad they didn't! That agent who handled Arsenal's end of the deal was on telly (SSN) saying Zenit didn't get the papers in on-time (I think that same interview is on the SSN website too)...i'm wondering if him saying that will cause people to look into it more? He should have kept his beak shut!]]>

  • Debs

Thanks Fabrez. That makes me feel so much better, but I feel better at ease once he’s back from Barcelona. Those ppl need to stop whispering stuff into his ears! lol

  • zohaib

I’ve still not been able to understand why some people put the Right Back in the Left Back’s position and the Left Back in the Right Back’s position. I’ve seen many people do it. I’ve seen the video game Fifa do it too. I just don’t get it. And it drives me insane. Do people not know left from right or what’s the logic behind it if I’m missing something ?!

  • Debs

< ![CDATA[LOL Zohaib. I guess it's because when you're looking at the team or formation from the front view, right back is on your left, and the left back is on your right!
So it's only when you're looking at the back view that the left back is on your left and the right back is on your right!
    Does that make sense?! lol]]>

  • zohaib

< ![CDATA[It makes sense, but I don't see how it applies here, on a page. The only two ways I can see possible, to display a team formation are these :

    1)
    Almunia <
    Sagna Toure Djourou Clichy
    Nasri Cesc Rosicky <
    VanPersie Eduardo Arshavin <

    2)
    Arshavin Eduardo VanPersie
    Rosicky Cesc Nasri
    Clichy Djourou Toure Sagna <
    Almunia

I think JDD has mixed up both the ways. He's used 2 for the backline and 1 for the rest. So it's obviously a wrong way to do it. And I think what he's done is is looked at the defence from the back and the attack from the front. If you're looking from the back the keeper comes first then the defence then the midfield then the attack. If you look at it from the front the attack comes first then the midfield then the defence then the keeper. So he's jumbled it all up.]]>

  • Fabrez

haha! That’s kinda harsh Zohaib! Where in fifa have u seen it? But that’s funny tho lol

  • zohaib

< ![CDATA[Now that I think about it, there's also a third way to do it :

    Sagna
    VanPersie Nasri
    Toure
    Eduardo Cesc Almunia
    Djourou
    Arshavin Rosicky
    Clichy

And if you reverse that, there's a fourth way too (the things I have to do to make my point clear) :

    Clichy
    Rosicky Arshavin
    Djourou
    Almunia Cesc Eduardo
    Toure
    Nasri VanPersie
    Sagna]]>

    < ![CDATA[LOL! Side-on view much better, huh?
But I guess as long as we all know Clichy plays on the left, and that Sagna plays on the right, it's all good?! But I see your point though Zohaib :)]]>

  • zohaib

Actually, I think in JDD’s defence, he’s looking at the team from underneath the pitch. If you know what I mean. Whereas most look at it fromt he top or side. He’s using a different way. Seems unusual to me, but since I’ve seen some people do it that way, I’m assuming its more of a psychological thing. You know like optical illusions and stuff.

  • Debs

Yeah Fabrez, was thinking about it a few hours ago! Lol. Sunday’s wayyy too far away!

  • Fabrez

Funny enuff…i played Pro Evo for the 1st time 2nite. I’ve been a Fifa player for years… Got an opinion of which 1 is better?

  • Fabrez

Personally, i’d say Fifa but most ppl i know swear by Pro…

  • zohaib

< ![CDATA[It definitely is a long wait till Sunday. Though probably still not enough time for Arshavin to get fit. Will he be in the starting eleven, or start off the bench, or will we not see him play until a couple more weeks of training ? Plus he's got to get his work visa. I think that should happen soon, hopefully by the end of the week.

Did anyone see the Ivan Gazidis interview ? Any thoughts ? He's been in the states but he's got a weird Australian/British accent, don't you think ?]]>

  • zohaib

< ![CDATA[PES is wayyyy better. Well, it was wayyy better until recently, where they're both pretty even. Fifa's got some team licenses, I think PES either has started to get them now or maybe I've got that wrong. PES is also known as Winning Eleven, although I think that's the version that's not got the licenses.

I think PES's gameplay is simpler. Fifa has now become more complicated. It's got a few more controls I think. But I can't be sure, havn't played in a while now.]]>

  • Debs

Saw the Gazidis interview and he does have a weird accent- he was born in South Africa, moved to England when he was younger, then moved to America about 15 yrs ago, so I guess he’s got a South African-British-American accent!

  • zohaib

< ![CDATA[So, first of all who's available for the spurs clash ?

Eduardo ? Wenger said he needed a few more games. Is it possible he may get a few minutes towards the end ?

Diaby ? How long is he out injured ?

Silvestre ? Not that it matters but some people are definitely wondering what this new 3 week routine is. First it's Toure, then Gallas, now Silvestre. Something's fishy.

So who all's fit ? I'm assuming Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Djourou, Clichy, Gibbs, Eboue, Nasri, Denilson, Song, Ramsey, Wilshere, Vela, Bischoff (when will he play !?), VanPersie, Bendtner, Adebayor.

And what'll the team look like if these are the players available ? It looks like we might still have a slight issue in midfield, until Arshavin's able to play. I'm absolutely against Eboue playing, because he'll give more of the same dissapointment, loosing the ball everytime he touches it. Plus he doesn't really give us anything other than nervousness. The crowd gets edgy causing the players to get edgy and in a derby that's the last thing you want to do. If the other option is to put a youngster there in place of Eboue, I'd still consider that a better option, even though it's still a make-shift solution. RM looks like it's easier for Wilshere than Denilson, Ramsey or Vela but I doubt he'll get a start ahead of Denilson there. At the moment of all those 4, Denilson is the most likely to play at RM for an important match. I've said for a while now that I'd like to see Vela play RM and cut in when he's in a position to do so. I think he can be very dangerous there. Next is LM. Nasri is probably first-choice there, although if I'm playing Denilson at RM then I'd probably want to play a more creative CM along with the DM Song, so I'd either stick Nasri or Ramsey there, and play either Ramsey or Nasri at LM. I think Ramsey should be able to play LM. Or maybe Wenger'll put Vela at LM if he wants to play Nasri through the center and Denilson as RM. I'm not against Vela as LM but I think he'd be better of at RM - more aggressive, attacking and threatening. Definitely better than Eboue. Everyone's better than him :(

What we're probably going to see is this, and it doesn't look too special to me :

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
    Eboue Denilson Song Nasri
    VanPersie Adebayor

    I'd rather have this :

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
    Denilson Ramsey Song Nasri
    VanPersie Bendtner

I do think that in this game we might finally see an Adebayor that's woken up, because he thinks only these games are important, which absolutely stinks btw. But I'm expecting him to be up, and maybe Wenger won't sit him on the bench because that guy just can't stop hoping, even though what Ade really needs is a kick up his backside. Maybe the perfect move would be to sit him on the bench so he can understand why he's getting punished.]]>
