Strength In Depth The Topic For Dicussion…

It's a relatively sunny day today. The news of short and long term injuries to some of the Chelsea and Man United squad, coupled with the dropped point by Liverpool in the last two games and joined by the potential signing of Andrei Arshavin, makes for a happy day.

I like happy days.

So, I had this dream yesterday about all our players being fit (yes, I know, far fetched hey?) and the sudden strength im depth that we would have. There was so many good players, that we didn't know what to do. We had no idea who would start and always knew we had players to change the game. We also had our loan players in the squad too. It was exciting stuff - and abruptly interrupted by an early morning doorbell.

So, this was our line up:

Almunia
Sagna – Toure – Gallas – Clichy
Walcott – Cesc – Denilson – Rosicky
Van Persie – Eduardo

And on the bench was…

Fabianski, Djourou, Song, Nasri, Bendtner, Adebayor, Vela.

And in the first team squad…

Mannone, Senderos, Eboue, Armand Traore, Diaby, Ramsey, Wilshere and Simpson

Check that squad / team out – surely unstoppable? In the comments yesterday, Zohaib commented on Man United and said “I think it’s fair to say that they’re lightyears ahead of us.”. I definitely disagree. Arsene has been interested in adding Arshavin to the mix, which would only increase our strength. He’s also been linked with a defensive midfielder, and a real replacement for Flamini / Gilberto / Diarra.

So, light years, hell no! More like 5 minutes ahead, or 9 points… or…

Okay, so let’s take a look at the Arshavin deal and more noises are coming out of Zenit today about the deal. Apparently we have offered £12m to Zenit and rumours are that we are unlikely to budge. Zenit’s general director Maxim Mitrofanov was in full flow recently and said:

“The situation has not changed since Friday, which means Arsenal would like to pay only £12m, not one cent more. And we, at Zenit, are ready to discuss with them about maybe a better offer from our side.

“We are ready to make a step forward to them, but they should do the same. However, I have told the people from Arsenal we are ready to discuss a lot of things to make the situation easier for them. They have a deadline, as I understand, until 26th January, because after that, they should have some time to get another player and I respect this position.”

Dennis Latcher, Arshavin’s agent, commented on using the Webster clause if Zenit refuse to let him go:

“Unfortunately in this matter there is no movement. The sticking point is, of course, money and rather the totally unacceptable amount of Zenit’s demands for Andrei. The position of the club remains unchanged and that is the reality that we have faced for a long time. If the situation remains unchanged we will use Article 17 of the Fifa rules and buy out the contract of Andrei at the club, which could happen as early as November this year.

All I’ve got to say about that is that whatever is done to a previous club, will be done to you at one point. If we were to sign Arshavin, aged 27/28, he would be able to buy his contract out in two years too. Karma, we’ve all got to remember what goes around comes around…

So, exciting times when our injured players get back and happy days if we sign someone…

I like happy days.]]>

< ![CDATA[Dev as ever I agree with you about the squads strength - but too many of our players in 2008 failed to hit form. Fabregas was getting tired, Diaby is inconsistant (when he's bad he's bad, but when he's good he's like Viera), Denilson needs to work on the quality of his final ball, Adebayor has been woeful in the last 6 months (possibly because of his head elsewhere), Gallas hasn't been great, recently Toure has been less than sharp....

We have a very good squad without injury, and no doubt injury has weakened us considerably - in fact we have a brilliant squad. I said this two or three months ago when everyone was calling for Wengers head.

But the fact remains that even the un-injured players have turned in some less than impressive performances which is where I agree with Zohaib - Manchester United are ahead of us. Maybe not lightyears, but very rarely in the last 12 months have you seen a united player turn in anything other than a commited performance.

In fact where Ferguson has always excelled is managing weak players. He’s never shied away from pulling an underperforming player at half time, and by his treatment of Keane/Beckham you can assume that if in charge of Gallas/Adebayor neither player would be in England now.

On balance though, under achievement aside, we have on balance a much more exciting squad. And I mean exciting.]]>

< ![CDATA[I disagree with sacking the board, but agree Wenger has been talking bollocks far too often and we are definately being mugged off with the non-existance in the transfer markets.

Totally disagree with boycotting games - I'm not some spoilt bastard who only goes if we're winning all the time.

There are issues within the team and the club that need to be addressed but boycotting home games if not going to help anyone.

We can show our disapproval in other ways - like not singing Adebayor's song]]>

< ![CDATA[I took it a step futher and had a dream a week or so ago...and i was playing for Arsenal...tried to score but it didn't end pretty lol Quite a detailed dream dev...i never seem to remember the details of my dreams for some reason. Anyway...
With all these injuries, i've honestly lost sight of the amazing squad that we have. I for 1 have never called for Wenger's head...i'm always supportive of him granted he would make decisions that we won't always agree with. The injuries have ultimately made the difference in the title race this season in our case which is very souring but he have to deal with it. But with everyone fit, we are easily as good as Man U's squad and better than that of Chelsea and Liverpool in my honest opinion.
We sorely missed Eduardo's slick abilities in the box & his eye for goal, we miss Theo & Rosicky's attacking treat...getting into that final 3rd as well as Cesc's creativity & vision. Those are potential starters for Arsenal so no doubt that we've been hit hard. Hoping that we can finish the season with more and more players and thus finish well.

As for Arshavin...that's just going to be a frustrating wait and see/ they say, we hardly say, his agent is saying/ is sum1 else gonna buy him/ he's frustrated, we're all frustrated situation. I would just like to wake up and hear we signed him...]]>

  • Fabrez

Oh my bad…the reserves game in on ATVO! Look out for a Jack Wilshere cracker…the kid is amazing!

  • Debs

That was a wicked goal Fabrez! Absolutely wicked! Can’t wait for him to grow older and become a first-team regular :)

  • Fabrez

Yup yup yup! :D A win with a Eduardo goal will make my night!

  • Debs

same as mine mate, same as mine! :) (Oh, and a Spurs Carling cup loss will make my week! ;) )

  • Fabrez

Not quite going to plan at the min debs!!

  • Debs

< ![CDATA[Yeah, not at all! Lol. But you never know, though! 17mins is a while, but Fingers crossed.
Ooh! A goal! Don't know who scored though! See?!]]>

  • Fabrez

Yeah! And just off the woodwork! 4 mins 2 do something! NOOOOOOO!!!! Eddy in the back of the net but offside!!! And i was shouting 4 joy! :(

  • Debs

< ![CDATA[Uhuh! If not for the bleeding flag! lol
Good performance from him though- still hoping!]]>

  • Fabrez

Well…eventful to say the least…we looked good with 10 men… and how we didn’t lose in the last couple minutes…i do not know lol But a draw…given what we gave was fair. Eduardo looked good…lasted the full 90…so there r positives! :)

  • Debs

< ![CDATA[That was close, mate. It actually felt like a PL match- all the drama, Stoke almost nicking it in the last minute, but same ol' defensive issues! lol
But Eduardo played 90mins, scored a good off-side goal (lol), and well, the boys are up to 2nd, even though on goal difference. But good to see them come back, even though they were down to 10-men.
Maybe we might see Eduardo on the bench on saturday?]]>

  • Debs

    lol

  • Fabrez

Ohhhh debs…don’t get my hopes up for Saturday! lol But i really do hope he will be on the bench. That would be absolutely ace. But yeah…real PL drama to it! But we gotta work on the set pieces…looked weak in the air…soft goals…same ole defensive issues indeed!

  • Debs

    < ![CDATA[Oops, the match's on Sunday! lol
I think Sunday might be the perfect run out for him, but as a sub. You never know though- it's Wenger, right? lol
Also, the next reserve game is on the 9th of Feb, (although there's an FA youth cup match on the 30th of January- dont think he's able to play in that), and Wenger keeps saying he needs games, and we know that too, so why not?
But yeah, let's not get too too excited (maybe just a little bit ;) )

But it seems the first team and the reserves both have defensive issues- I think it's something that needs to be addressed- maybe too much focus on the passing game?]]>

  • zohaib

what happened ? who scored ? who got sent off ?

  • Fabrez

Well yeah…no Youth Cup for him but I do think the FA Cup is an ideal oppurtunity for him to be intergrated back into the 1st team…even if it means that’s his only 1st team football until the reserves game on Feb 9th. I think part of our defensive problem is down to that lack of defensive steel in central midfield. I think the 1st team is starting to get it together…credit to them… We r such a good club throughout the ranks in terms of attack…but probably not enough concentration on the defensive side of things…time 2 fight and play for each other defensively too.

  • Fabrez

Well zohaib….Randall got sent off, Wilshere scored a brillaint curling shot…(i think it was the outside of his left foot)…and i have literally 4gotten who scored our other goal lol But Eduardo had a goal ruled offside…was very close. Ended 2-2

  • zohaib

    < ![CDATA[Randall .... no surprises there.
Outside of the left foot for Wilshere. Wow. This guy's just getting better :P]]>

  • Fabrez

3-0?!?!?!?! U LIE!! Hahahaha! And Burnley have the away goal!! lol!

  • Debs

Lol Zohaib. Wilshere scored too goals- one absolute delight from the outside of his left boot! Total class! And I think it was Randall who got sent off- straight red, with the scores at 2-1. Wilshere got the equaliser with another good goal, although I’m not sure if there was a deflection.

  • Fabrez

Yes yes yes! It was Wilshere with a good strike…and yeah…may have deflected! It had 2 b him twice cuz i knew no 1 else scored!!

  • Debs

Word! 3 nil! Fabrez, seems like I’m gonna have a good week, and in my mind, Eduardo scored! lol

  • zohaib

I speak the truth. If they can keep a goal out for the extra 30 mins, they go through !

  • Fabrez

He scored in mine too! And apparantley the away goal rule doesn’t apply?? Extra time? Wow…this is crazy!

  • zohaib

i just learnt last night that the away goal only counts at the end of extra time. I’m still not sure whether this is just for the Carling Cup or if it’s a new rule in all cup competitions. Anyone have any ideas ?

  • Fabrez

Ohhh…i see. Away goal only applies after extra time…lol Defend Burnley defend!!!!

  • Fabrez

Spurs have had a howler of a miss by Pavlyuchenko and Bale! I’m loving it!!

  • Fabrez

And no…i don’t kno what competitions that rule covers :S

    us playing spurs, sorry.

    LOL…penalties forever huh? If only!

  • Debs

I’m so so crushed! Spurs don’t deserve to be in the final, so I guess I’d prefer man u, but even then, I don’t want man u to win either. Dunno if I’ll bother watching the match :(

  • zohaib

lol hahahahahaah. playing on and on and on, on penalties. hahahaah.

  • Debs

Yeah, if only, Fabrez! But Sp*rs have got deep issues though, that’s the only good point from all this, and with them ‘worrying’ about the FA cup final, the more the chance of their PL form getting even worse!

  • Fabrez

Same…i like Harry…but in years to come, ppl will say “Spurs won the Carling Cup 09″, not “Harry won the Carling Cup 09″ so Man U it is (typed reluctantly btw!)

  • Fabrez

    True talk debs, true talk!

  • Debs

Yeah, penalties until it gets dark, cos the players keep skying it or the keeper keeps saving them, then the 2 teams who lost in the semis get to play the final again! Fantasy, I know, but it’s making me feel ever so slightly better! lol

  • Debs

I never really like Harry, you know… And now he’s sp*rs manager so that makes it worse, innit?

  • Debs

    *liked

  • Fabrez

lol…yeah… I thought he was ok tho…did a decent job with Pompey…good English manager…but he’s definitely earned no stripes by goin where he’s gone to now. Ah well….FA Cup, here we come?! I was thinkin…shud b interesting to see Ramsey goin back “home”…he better not be all emotional and play some good footy! lol

  • Debs

Yeah, I think Ramsey would have a really really decent game against Cardiff, cos I think he’ll want to show that his move to us has improved him and all- he may get emotional getting into the stadium, but on the pitch, I think he’ll up it a notch- well, that’s what I hope. Maybe he’ll even score!

< ![CDATA[Fabrez, a bit of Arshavin news that might please you from Sky Sports. I guess it sort of shows he wants to come to Arsenal?:

Russian schemer Andrei Arshavin has revealed he has been praying Zenit St Petersburg allow him to join Arsenal]]>

  • Fabrez

:D Lovely! That’s good news then. But hope the deal goes thru 2morro…bcuz i heard 2morro is THE day!

  • Fabrez

Well i mean the transfer fee agreement could be 2morro once both sides decide that they are happy…personal terms is another story i’m guessing…but the battle should be more or less won once that transfer fee is agreed!

  • Debs

< ![CDATA[Yeah, I think the fee's the main hassle, and I have a feeling Arshavin would jump at any thing offered, just to get himself out of Zenit, as long as it's not a totally ridiculous deal being offered!
I'd say if the fee and all was agreed in the morning, by the end of the working day (or at the latest, the next morning) the personal terms will be sorted. I wouldn't be surprised if Wenger's been hinting at what he's prepared to offer, that's why Arshavin's agent wants the fee to be agreed asap, cos it's probably a reasonable one. But well, you never know!]]>

  • zohaib

< ![CDATA[I've just read the article you're talking about Debs. And before that there was another article. The one where Arshavin's agent said Arshavin would be willing to buy out his contract as a worst case scenario. Although he also said 'as early as November this year'. So I'm guessing it's not an option in this transfer window. Bummer. Here's what was reported by SkySports :

"Unfortunately in this matter there is no movement," Arshavin's agent Dennis Lachter told the Russia press.
"The sticking point is, of course, money and rather the totally unacceptable amount of Zenit's demands for Andrei.
"The position of the club remains unchanged and that is the reality that we have faced for a long time.
"If the situation remains unchanged we will use Article 17 of the Fifa rules and buy out the contract of Andrei at the club, which could happen as early as November this year.
"In that situation, Zenit would have to be satisfied with a much smaller amount than they are offered by representatives of Arsenal.
"If Andrei becomes a free agent, he will get many proposals, from England, Italy and Spain."
Arsenal are reported to have tabled a £12million pound offer for Arshavin, but Zenit believe their prized asset is worth more than that in the current market.
"The situation has not changed since Friday, which means Arsenal would like to pay only £12m, not one cent more," said Zenit's general director Maxim Mitrofanov.
"And we, at Zenit, are ready to discuss with them about maybe a better offer from our side.
"We are ready to make a step forward to them, but they should do the same.
"However, I have told the people from Arsenal we are ready to discuss a lot of things to make the situation easier for them.
"They have a deadline, as I understand, until 26th January, because after that, they should have some time to get another player and I respect this position."

His agent's obviously trying to force a move. I like this agent. Isn't afraid to make 'threats'.]]>

  • zohaib

< ![CDATA[So that means that the big day is 26th Jan. Which means the coming Monday. So there's this weekend. We should know where we stand on Arshavin after our FA Cup game. Unless we manage to strike a deal before that of course.

I wonder what our other targets are. There's been no talk about possible targets if Arshavin doesn't make it here. And it gives us about a week till the end of the transfer window to start negotiations with anybody else. Is that enough time ?! Have we identified anybody else ?! What about a DM ?!]]>

  • Debs

< ![CDATA[yeah, Zohaib. No one's really been linked to us as much as Arshavin. I think Wenger does have a few ppl he's chasing, but they are probably not well-known ppl, that's why we've not heard anything about it, seeing as Wenger likes to keep everything on the down-low! I think a week might be enough, cos he's probably started, and probably finished, the main parts of whatever back-up deal, such as the fee, and probably has an agreement to wrap things up, if it becomes necessary quickly. I doubt if even Wenger would leave preliminary negotiations to practically the last minute!

    Oh, Arshavin also said, apparently:

“I see Arsenal as my team of the future. Everything now depends on Zenit. If they want to sell me, they can do it very quickly.
Zenit have to think realistically. I believe that Arsenal’s offer is much closer to my real value in the transfer market at the moment

How many players actually talk down their transfer fee? He’s definitely desperate!]]>

  • http://kierandelaney.net/blog kierandelaney.net/blog

The away goals rule after extra time only refers to the two leg carling cup matches as far as I am aware. Fa Cup still has replays.

  • http://kierandelaney.net/blog kierandelaney.net/blog

Also – Palcios is a player I’ve always rated, but the fee was ridiculous, only really City have bought anyone but at vastly inflated fees (Bridge and Bellamy for £30m?! :) ) – I don’t understand the comments earlier about the lack of transfer market. It’s not like Arsenal are the only club who haven’t bought anybody.

  • Marriich

Redknapp is a cheque book manager. Sputing out he needs to spend to bring in better players. EXCUSE ME what, better players. Erm you have a squad of internationals out there of which most were over the 10mil mark you blind idiot of a muppett. But then again he is at spurs isn’t he. How much were Modric, Pavulychenko, Defoe, Bently, Placios (lol) oh and god knows how much more as you’ve bought god knows how many. And here he is, the man who apparantly can work miracles with bargains. Don’t make me laugh. Any of the above mentioned would show there class in any OTHER prem club. It’s not the players, it’s Spurs and Redknapp. No wonder Bellamy didn’t come. Told you, Redknapp just loves a cheque book, I’m being honest here Spurs fans, with that squad you should be higher up the table, you have got class players, you have got internationals, Harry doesn’t need to spend anymore money, he needs to work with the talent you got. Thats the mark of a good manager, not how much you spend, it’s how you work with what you’ve got. And as a prime example, watch City and all their spending, under Hughes they won’t go anywhere, no mater how much they spend as Hughes won’t be able to handle the high profile players. And unfortunaetly for you, Redknapp can not handle the talent you have for what ever reason. I’m not sayig this bitterly by the way. He was happy to take the job, he was happy to spend 15mil on Defoe, now 14 on Placios (who has only 1 season in the prem for a mid table club) and still he wants more. He is whinging cos he can’t handle it, you have injuries, so does every other club, your squad apparently is thread bare, well hello, take a look at most of the other clubs. Your situation is really no different to ours, but Redknapp believes his own hype and thinks money sorts everything. It doesn’t. Redknapp is not as good as the hype says

< ![CDATA[I haven't commented in a while, had alot of real life things to deal with, but I've just seen Eduardo has played a full 90 minutes for the reserves, which is great, hopefully he will be back in the first team and giving us that much needed cutting edge in the final third!

As for Redknapp I agree, he is over rated, and as for him always spending, thats evident at portsmouth where the players were getting paid wages the club couldn't really afford.

As for us, I'm still praying we get Arshavin and a good strong CDM, I was thinking of a couple of good players what about Toulalan from Lyon (I think) or Polombo from Sampordia, possibly wouldn't be able to get them now, but in the summer they could be great signings if we don't get anyone now (which looks likely), both have expierence, especially Polombo.]]>

< ![CDATA[last night's game was a real hum dinger wasn't it - no thanks to Tottenham Hotspur. They didn't turn up, their players to a man had an absolute Weston Super Mare and once again Harry is in the papers moaning about just about everything apart from his own tactics and game plan (or lack of...)

When he took over he inherited a 'decent squad' of players in his own words. Since then his Spurs side went on a decent run but have since slumped and are still well and truly in the mire. They scraped through to the Milk Cup final last night and Harry is all over the papers this morning saying that he won't play his best players on Saturday because he can't risk them - he's basically saying "sod the FA Cup". And there was naive old me thinking it was just the foreign managers who did the historic trophy down. He, his son and his cohorts (Tim Sherwood, Sir Les etc etc) are the first ones to slag off any foreign manager that rests players in the FA Cup, saying they don't understand the British game or the passion and history of the cup.

Yet there's no criticism of him today in the papers for admitting he's going to throw Saturday's game against Man U. Neither is there any widespread criticism of him for the shocking way they are playing football at the moment, the mediocre results he's achieving or the ludicrous amounts of cash he's lashing out left right and centre on players. It seems Redknapp himself is above criticism.

Bah, I'm rambling a bit here. I just wanted to vent my spleen I suppose. Harry is not the best English manager around. He is not a man that runs a club on a shoestring budget and achieves amazing results - he's a decent man manager that splashes the cash and achieves below par results. And he has a tendency to walk when things get tough. If he was your average Carlos Kick a Ball, the media would be all over this. But as we all know, Harry is a media darling (of sorts) - he scratches their backs with stories and stuff and in return he has a get out of jail free card that means he's immune from negative press coverage. And to boot, he looks like a celeriac.]]>

No wonder Bellamy didn’t come. [to spurs]

What? That’s ridiculous – West Ham refused to sell him the Spurs on the grounds that it would strengthen one of their main opponents in the relagation dogfight. He has even said, since signing for City, he would rather have stayed in London, but that he is excited for the future in any case. Spurs were always his first choice.

Although Redknapp looks like he is getting found out doesn’t he – he did well with Portsmouth, something that can’t be taken away from him, but he’s very much like Sam Allardyce. Give him 8 or 9 cloggers and a fast forward and he’ll grind out 1-0′s.]]>

  • http://kierandelaney.net/blog kierandelaney.net/blog

I didn’t finish properly – what I meant was, with a shit team both managers can grind out 1-0′s but given a team of talent (alright, Newcastle are mediocre but they have some good players) both managers have either failed or are failing miserably.

    < ![CDATA[HOLY BAT SHIT.

    From Engadget . com

As we’re confident that you know, one of the biggest downsides to catching an event in-stadium is the inability to see instant replays. Oh sure, a few venues play back sequences for the fanatics in attendance, but you’ll still get a much better angle from the comfort of your own couch. English soccer club Arsenal is hoping to remove that obstacle from fans’ minds by testing out an instant replay system with Sony’s PSP. In theory, at least, a Sony-developed application would enable patrons to “watch live streaming video of a game, along with data and statistics, and provide the ability to watch near-instant replays.” ‘Course, we’ve already seen Bluetooth added to venues and a similar system as this installed at Safeco Field, but we still envision this being a hit if it’s really rolled out within 18 months as planned.]]>

Sounds great doesn't it. Once again. Arsenal lead the way, albeit in 'off-the-field' matters. But WOW !

I also read, we're the only stadium to have an LCD screen ! :

The Emirates Stadium could be leading the way again with new technology, after being (amongst other things) the first stadium to only have LCD displays.

There is now a proposal to allow fans attending matches to be able to watch replays on devices such as the Sony PSP.

Replays are currently shown on the two giant screens in the stadium, but this may soon change, with a proposal being to "enable patrons to watch live streaming video of a game, along with data and statistics, and provide the ability to watch near-instant replays."

It is likely to take 18 months to roll out.]]>

< ![CDATA["Florentino wants to make Wenger both coach and general manager of Real this summer - and will promise it will happen," a source close to Florentino Perez, Real Madrid presidential contender, told The Mirror.
"With Kaka and Fabregas as players and Wenger as coach, Florentino will take Real back to where they should be," the Perez contact said.
The 61-year-old Perez was the architect of Real Madrid's galactico era between 2000 and 2006 and was elected as president on the back of a promise to sign Luis Figo from arch-rivals Barcelona.Perez is the favourite to win the presidency following the resignation of Ramon Calderon over a vote-rigging scandal and will also target Gunners skipper Cesc Fabregas and Kaka, from AC Milan.
Wenger has twice rejected Perez's overtures during his 13-years as Arsenal manager; but the dual role of coach and general manager - which would mean the departure of sporting director Predrag Mijatovic - would mean far greater control at Real than previous coaches have enjoyed.

The retards at Real Madrid are at it again. Fooling/blackmailing the fans into thinking that they'd be able to get stars from other teams, only so that they get elected.]]>
