Porto: More Team News & Comments Update

{update: starting XI announced}

Eboue – Gallas – Djourou – Silvestre
Ramsey – Denilson – Song – Diaby
Bendtner – Vela

{end of update}

Today is Eboue’s chance to show how good he is. He’s had a few days more rest and Arsene has confirmed the Ivorian will start. Whether it will be in defence or midfield, is yet to be revealed, but he’s ready for the game tonight.

“Emmanuel Eboue will start. He is completely in the right frame of mind. Of course he was disappointed for a few days but football is magic because you have the next game and in that you have the opportunity to show how good you are.”

It’s clear that Porto players don’t read the blog. Aptly named striker, Hulk, has singled out Adebayor as the main threat tonight. The only problem with this Mr Hullk, is that he’s not included in the squad.

This is just a quick update and there will be more later, but I thought I’d take the opportunity to speak about the war of words between Kieran and Zohaib in the comments. Firstly. there is no need for name calling Zohaib, both you and other commenters are allowed your own opinions and that is what makes the site a good forum for debate. Kieran is the twice winner of the “Best commenter” award, which implies he is anything but a moron. (And Kieran, Zohaib is not a big hairy clams quim)…. Zohaib, we do enjoy reading your comments and you’ve made some great points, but please try and treat the rest of the gang with a little more respect.

Kieran did make a good summation of Tevez, Bendtner and Vela.

1) I believe Bendtner is shit.
2) I believe Tevez is a better player.
3) I do not believe there would be a negative impact on Arsenal FC if Tevez replaced Bendtner.
4) I believe that Vela is a better player than Bendtner.
5) I’m pretty sure Vela is younger than Bendtner.
6) I use the above two facts to draw a conclusion – Bendtner isn’t going to get any better. If he does Vela will improve as well, meaning Vela will always be the better player.
7) I think a player of any height can head a ball, I don’t believe you need to be freakishly tall to head the ball,
8 ) Bendtner missed two glorious headed opportunities against Man U – I think this proves that tall players aren’t guaranteed to convert headed chances.
9) When first choice first team striker for Birmingham city, in 48 games Bendtner scored 13 goals. (Source. WIKIPEDIA).
10) I do not think this is the strike rate of a good striker of any age.

I’d have to agree.

Thanks for listening, and happy commenting…]]>

< ![CDATA[It's not immediately apparent from that 10 point summary that some of the debate centered around Tevez hypothetically replacing Bendtner would reduce the height of our forward line. I personally don't see that as a problem, hence my comments. Plenty of shorter players score headers.

It does however mean you lose that long ball / knock down aspect of play - Bendtner to his credit has played some flick on's. I'd still maintain though that Arsenal can't play very well this way - they just look uncomfortable with it. We'd still have Ade in anycase if we decided to go all George Graham again.]]>

< ![CDATA[just read. acmilan have confirmed that they'r interested in agger.

lol big phil's got them upset n on the hunt.

hope this doesnt mean he comes back. just sell him please.]]>

< ![CDATA[i think what Hulk might have meant was that since Adebayor isn't playing, we won't be as dangerous.

another way of writing us off.]]>

Zohaib – would you rather have Silvestre or Song or Senderos as back up for Gallas / Djourou / Toure?

You’ve got to hope that Maldini has given the lad some tips at not sucking hard!

(didn’t see much evidence of that against Pompey in the UEFA cup though…)

< ![CDATA[Sounds like you've been scrapping without me! I'm surprised to hear that anyone would argue the case for Bendtner over Tevez. I really rate Tevez. I think he is pretty unfortunate to play at the same club as Rooney. Any other team in the prem he would be starting.

Is there a rumour going around about Tevez joining The Arsenal then, or is this just some general banter?]]>

< ![CDATA[Nope! Just speculation. He's on a free this summer, which means he can sign for anyone in the Jan transfer window. He's already not happy at being a substitute every week and has always professed a love for London since playing for the Hammers.....

Just could come off - its from me saying that the only big names Wenger seems to buy are cut price because they aren't doing well (Henry), young (Anelka, rest of team) or on a free (Sol) - just like Tevez in August!]]>

Fergie addressed this in his pre-match press conference saying that he’s part of the squad and will see much more playing time in the future. As Rooney’s banned on Saturday, Tevez may get a run in their team.

Which is the flaw in the plan!!

< ![CDATA[dev thats a really tough question lol.

i'm assuming you're asking me to choose only one of silvestre, song or senderos. if so then it'll have to be silvestre.

toure, gallas and djourou can all play RCB LCB or RB as cover for sagna (i havnt seen gallas play there before so not sure about him but have a feeling he could).
this means that we have no cover for LB if clichy's injured. and gallas isnt a good enough cover. silvestre's better. song and senderos are obviously not good enough at LB.]]>

< ![CDATA[I think Gallas has played right back for Chelsea before. I think I'd rather have Senderos than Silvestre - but then I'm probably reminiscent of the CL run 2006!

One thing we know for sure (Bolton) is that Senderos can't play right back!]]>

< ![CDATA[Would be a top signing to nab Tevez. Is he still on loan to Utd then, they haven't yet dished out any money for him?

I would rather have Song play out of those CBs. If we're arguing who is the best LB then its obviously Silvestre but we have Gibbs improving at the moment. I think Song has potential. Senderos is too hit and miss, and Silvestre is just poo - without being too technical. In all honest, i can't see any of the trio being with us for too long.]]>

< ![CDATA[Dan - not sure the exact situation, but I think he had a contract that expires, maybe his load agreement expires instead - I just know he's on the eve of a free signing window.

He can't move in any case until August, so I fully expect him to do nothing until then to see how he fares at Utd. He'd be silly to sign for somone now and then get a three month run in the Utd first team.

Dev - I'm with you on Senderos. Both he and Silvestre are error prone and patchy - but I think youth and skill are firmly in Senderos favour. He is also captain of his international team, which means we have another leader in the back line.]]>

< ![CDATA[Given the general condemnation of the arrangements by which West Ham signed Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano in the summer of 2006, it can be forgotten that Tevez is still owned by 'third parties' - the offshore companies and unnamed investors represented by Kia Joorabchian. Manchester United signed the striker in the summer of 2007 on a two-year loan - for £8m - before the Premier League outlawed third-party 'ownership' of players - and have an option to buy him when the loan expires at the end of this season.

They are entitled to sign Tevez automatically if they pay Joorabchian a price agreed at the time of the loan, £34m. If they do not offer that much, Joorabchian is expected to sell the Argentinian to the highest bidder, for a value being talked up at present with the reported rival interest of Real Madrid.

    Source: United Fanzine

What this means is that Fergie may be questionning whether Tevez is worth the £34m now?

If United do sign Tevez - check this out:

Tevez has cost them £8m for loan, £4m/year in wages = £16m so far. And then add £34m and potentially £5m/year for his new contract for 5 years:

Total: £75m - I can see why Arsene opted not to sign him two years ago...

And I can see why the contract hasn't been finalised...!]]>

< ![CDATA[if we were to get distin though ... that'd be good.
he claimed we spoke to him recently. doesnt say how recently. him in place of silvestre would make sense, and now that we'v got sil i dont think thats happening.
    who knows though.

i dont think we'r going for a defender though. but it might depend on what gallas and eboue do. if they decide to leave either in jan or the summer, we might sign someone. no need for any strikers either. no sense in tevez for bendtner either. they arent like for like. we already have eduardo, vanpersie and vela to give us 'shortness' and creativeness. bendtner's here for a purpose. he has some qualitites which the others dont have.
we've got lots of central midfielders. but we dont have a solid defensive midfielder. song is improving but if ur thinking about using him permanently then you can kiss hopes of a trophy goodbye. DM is a position which we need to buy someone in, but as usualy we will probably not.
the only other position we need another player is on the wings. playing central midfielders out of position on the wing has more negatives than positives. it might give the youngsters more games to get better but at the expense of the team performance. a ready-made winger would be ideal since rosicky and walcott will most probably not return until march. and if eboue's situation is to worsen, there might be no choice. or we could play one of vanpersie, vela or eduardo there.]]>

Bedtner and Denilsons should sit up.]]>

Mate, Bendtner was just awful today – surely he needs to go on loan somewhere in Jan… maybe he will if Eduardo comes back and gets some form…
