We've just signed him. Mikael Silvestre, that is…
It just goes to show that transfers can happen in a day if all parties really want to. New reports suggest we’ve signed the player for £750,000 which is quite a snip. And the player has signed a deal worth £35,000 a week, although some reports suggest £50k a week, which is what I believe the player was on at United. I doubt we’d pay £50k a week for a 31 year old. But at less than a million and on a two year contract, it does look like decent business by Arsene, even if we hate the guy!
“We have a strong squad but a young squad and Mikael’s versatility, experience and calibre will provide the extra depth we need to reinforce our challenge for honours this season. His defensive adaptability will serve us well and it’s a big plus that Mikael has top level experience and a great understanding of football in the Premier League.”
Whilst that is true, Silvestre is a very injury prone player, who will surely block the development of players such as Johan Djourou and Philippe Senderos. Unless of course, Arsene thinks a fit, on form Silvestre is better…
The player himself has discussed having a new challenge and says he’s completely over his injuries. He is also believed to be pencilled in to play at centre back rather than left back and he has joined Arsenal to push for a first team slot.
The player spoke yesterday:
“I’ve spent a large part of my career at United, the last nine years, and I’ll remember that time fondly but feel I’m ready for a new challenge.”
“Arsenal are known for playing technical and skilful football, and have a young but experienced squad. I’m really excited about this next stage of my career, hopefully playing my part in helping the club to new successes.”
And then continued today on Arsenal TV. If you are a registered Arsenal TV online viewer, you can watch the interview here.
One person who thinks the player is exactly what we need is Frank McLintock :
“Silvestre will be a very, very good signing for us.
“I never even thought about him but he is just the type of player we need. He has bags of experience and won’t cost a lot as he is 31.
“Being French, he’ll have no trouble settling in.”
I’m torn on this transfer. I feel that he can give some experience to the squad yes, but I also feel that he last few seasons at United have been very poor. He’s looked silly and looked like he’s past it. I hope Arsene can rejuvenate the player and get him playing like his early days.
After Gallas, we’ve now signed Silvestre, all we need now is Steve Finnan and we’ve got a whole set of hated defenders…
Interesting times down at the Emirates…]]>
