Before Matty F left, Arsene spoke about wanting a creative player and a defender / defensive player. We've been linked with Lucio as a centre-back to come in alongside Toure or Gallas. If we were to sign someone such as the Brazilian, it would raise questions about which defender wouldn't start. Would Toure be pushed into central midfield alongside Cesc as surely he's a better defender than Gallas. Sagna and Clichy are pretty much untouchable in their respective positions. But we can't oust Gallas as he's our captain? Interesting questions for Arsene to answer this summer, but defensively we're not good enough.
The creative player is interesting too, as Rosicky is perennially injured at the moment. But when all players are fit, our attacking / creative options are: Cesc, Hleb, Rosicky, Eduardo, Walcott, Van Perise, Adebayor and Bendtner. And let's not forget Carlos Vela. It's hard to see where we can strengthen. Hleb, a good player, lacks goals and assists. Rosicky always seems to be injured. You could see a front four of Ade and VP with Vela and Walcott on either wing, with Hleb, Rosicky, Bendtner and Eduardo the backup options. We don't really know what Vela is all about, so take that comment with a pinch of salt. I'd say the creative player has to be a winger. We know Rosikcy, Hleb, Cec, Denilson and Diaby all can play in central attacking midfield. But all struggle on the wing. We've been linked with Niko Kranjar and Matias Delgado, so I'd expect it to be someone in that mould.
Arsene said on the incoming players:
“What is unbelievable is I’m sitting here and it is like we have killed all the players. Yet when I go to my office I have 220 calls from players who want to come in. What we need next year is two or three players maybe. We need talent. I think a huge player is better than a huge name. You have huge names who produce very little at the moment. “
And that’s something we’ll see a lot of this close season, agents will spin stories and many false stories will fly around. Arsene has been keen to stress that he wants to keep the squad together. With Matty F already gone, he doesn’t want to see any more players go.
“Look, there is one player who is free, and he has already left. For me, 98 per cent of the squad will be here next season. And the two per cent have already gone. The rest are all under contract. If anybody wants to buy a player he has to call me. I can give you my number if you want because maybe some ignore that I have a phone.
There is a doubt over Alex Hleb at the moment, we’ve heard statements from his agent in regards to him leaving. It’s a tough one. The papers and his agent are really angling for a move, but the player hasn’t really said anything himself about the potential move. The move has been touted in the papers of using the Webster clause. This clause as such, is that when a player is 3 years into a contract then he has the ability to buy out of the remainder of his contract. With Hleb currently on a £35,000 a week contract, the “fee” would be in the region of £3.6m. Arsene doubts it can be used.
“That is not as simple as it looks. And you should not forget that what players can do to us we can do to them. The Webster clause is not easy, you can’t come in next day and buy out. There is no rule that says what it is all about. You have to go to a tribunal and then to FIFA and if you don’t agree with FIFA [you] have to go to ACAS. It takes a lot of months. And you can be banned for the whole period if it is not done in a proper way.”
In addition to this, there is a gentleman’s agreement about asking players to use this, if big clubs such as Inter and Arsenal have issues, it’s something that could spiral across Europe and become main stay.
It’s Sunderland versus Arsenal tomorrow, come on you Gooners, it’s going to be a fun final day of the Premiership, more tomorrow.]]>
