Van Persie’s Style
Style is what Arsenal are all about. We ooze style. We try to play with a big of panache and a big of va va voom. Pass, move, shoot, score… We’ve scored over 100 goals in all competitions this season and have a phrase adopted after us… “the arsenal way”…
Van Persie has been speaking about our style of play and how regardless of whether win won a trophy this season or not, ultimately, he’d prefer to play in our style than any other type of football.
“For me, the basic of football is to give enjoyment to people. That’s where it starts We are like 11 actors, we have to give enjoyment to people buying a ticket.
“We will not change our philosophy now. Yes, at the end of season, people might say: ‘Arsenal played great football yet won nothing?’
“But there are a lot of teams who didn’t play so well and didn’t win anything either. This is the way we think football has to be played.
“We really think that we can win things with our way of playing – with our approach to the game.
“We have to stick with our own ideas and our own way of playing football. I don’t want to change because I really believe we can win things, big things, with this style of football.”
Insightful stuff from the Dutchman, and it’s very much true…
The Youth Policy
The youth policy is something that is very much acknowledged at Arsenal. Yes, we do spend money on a few players here and there, but over 60% of our squad is made up of people who have joined, trained in the youth team and then got in to the first team or bought young and thrown into the first team. Unknown players such as Toure, Senderos, Clichy, Eboue, Cesc, Flamini, Ade… have all made their name at Arsenal… Arsene has been talking about the youth policy…
“We have gone for a policy and have to stick with it. It’s very difficult to change the policy when you’re in the middle of it and of course you destroy the work you’ve completed in the previous years.
“We are very close to our rivals and we have to keep this team together. We fight with Chelsea who lose over £100million per year and we make £50million per year.
“We still have to beat them and if we don’t beat them then it’s viewed as a disaster. I have to take a better perspective on it.
“We play against Manchester United today and how much money have they spent on players? But I still believe we can beat them.
“When you go for a youth policy you know about the price you must pay. Decisive moments in games we have shown a lack of maturity and that’s what’s gone wrong for us recently. It’s only maturity, not quality.”
Peter Hill Wood has also commented on the transfer activity and maybe the will to win, a trophy in the cabinet is something that the board are starting to really want. PHW said:
“We will meet with Arsene in a very casual atmosphere and it will be on the lines of, ‘How did you see the season? Do you want another striker or centre-back?’
“The money is there if he wants it. The club never turned down any single request he has made about buying a player.”
Indication that the board may have thought that another striker wouldn’t have gone amiss this season, and with Eduardo injured, I’d expect some activity. We’ve also been a bit stretched defensively and PHW has mentioned that too… whatever happens this summer, I wouldn’t expect too much activity.
Team news sees Van Persie ready to start today and something about the way he plays always excites the fans…! It’s still unconfirmed whether Walcott will start or not, but I expect to see him at some point of the game. The line up may also include Diaby as he’s coming back from injury now and played well in midweek.
The squad is:
Almunia, Lehmann, Toure, Gallas, Senderos, Clichy, Hoyte, Cesc, Gilberto, Hleb, Eboue, Diaby, Walcott, Adebayor, Van Persie, Bendtner. Here’s an overview of possible starting line up:
